Ignacio Antonio Amador, 34, also known as Antonio Balle, was arrested Monday on charges of attempted felony murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, records showed.

According to an arrest report, Amador and the victim have been in a relationship for seven years and have a child in common who lives in Nicaragua.

On Sunday morning, officers responded to reports of a woman stabbed in the neck at a home on Northwest 1st Place and found the woman with several stab wounds in her body and neck area.

She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where doctors found she had a blade lodged in her neck and was stabbed six times on her body, which caused a punctured lung, the report said.

A witness said they heard the woman screaming and saw the boyfriend covered in blood, then saw the victim who was asking for help while lying in bed covered in blood, the report said.

The witness told Amador he was going to pay for what he did and he replied “I found her with another guy yesterday,” the report said.

The witness saw the blade lodged in the victim’s neck, the report said.

Amador was found by the domestic violence apprehension team on Monday and taken into custody before he was booked into jail.

He appeared in court Tuesday where he was ordered held without bond and appointed a public defender.

Video shows moments after SUV fell from I-95 in Miami after crash https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/video-shows-moments-after-suv-fell-from-i-95-in-miami/3423857/ 3423857 post 9902614 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/car-off-i95.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Shocking video captured the moments after witnesses said a vehicle fell off Interstate 95 in Miami on Saturday.

The incident was reported in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Northwest 2nd Street around 3:40 p.m.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said a green Toyota SUV and a blue Mazda SUV were involved in a crash that caused the Toyota to lose control, hit a barrier wall and overturn before it went over the wall.

The Toyota fell off of the I-95 overpass and came to rest on the Flagler St Bridge underneath, FHP officials said.

Video from Only in Dade shows a mangled SUV and the moment a Good Samaritan helped a man out of the vehicle.

Cameras also captured major traffic backups nearby and debris scattered across the roadway.

Witnesses told NBC6 that the SUV ended up dangling on the structures below the overpass.

“The front was leaning against the bridge and the rear was leaning against another wall. The door was pretty much just hanging in the air – probably an 8-foot drop between him and the floor,” Cristian Villalba said.

Villalba said he was giving out food to homeless people with members of his church before he heard the crash and rushed over to help.

“When we got there, we noticed that the car was technically in the air. It was leaning on the bridge. The man was a little confused. He wasn’t really aware of where he was,” Villalba said.

Villalba said the driver also couldn’t get his seatbelt off, so a homeless man used a knife to free him.

“The gentleman was about to step out of the car and fall. So, that’s when I got on the hood of the car and tried to pull him up from behind before he fell,” he added.

The driver of the Toyota was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Video shows Miami fan nabbing Ohtani's historic 50-50 homer that may be worth millions https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/video-shows-miami-fan-nabbing-ohtanis-historic-50-50-homer-that-may-be-worth-millions/3423429/ 3423429 post 9901434 Only in Dade https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/092124-Miami-Marlins-shohei-ohtani-home-run-ball-scramble-video.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all It was the catch of a lifetime for a Miami baseball fan attending Thursday’s Marlins game against the Los Angeles Dodgers when he left the ballpark with a piece of history that could be worth millions.

The Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani launched his 50th home run of the season into the left field stands at loanDepot Park in the 7th inning as L.A. routed the Marlins 20-4.

Video from Only in Dade showed a mad scramble among fans after the ball landed with one man eventually claiming victory and hoisting the ball in the air.

Experts believe the ball could be worth hundreds of thousands or possibly millions.

That’s because the home run was no ordinary homer, it placed Ohtani in a category all his own.

With that home run, one of his three hit that day, and a stolen base earlier in the game that was one of two in the game, Ohtani became the first member of the 50-homer, 50-stolen base club.

Five other players, beginning with Jose Canseco in 1988, have joined the 40-40 club, but Ohtani is the first to reach 50-50.

The fan who ended up with the ball has not yet been publicly identified or announced an intention to sell.

Other valuable baseballs that made their way into the stands in recent years included Albert Pujols’ 700th career home run in 2022 that sold at auction for $360,000 and Aaron Judge’s 62nd home run ball hit later that year that was auctioned for $1.5 million.

People across the globe want to move to Miami, study says https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/people-across-the-globe-want-to-move-to-miami-study-says/3407096/ 3407096 post 9097398 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2023/11/Downtown-Miami.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A new study has found that Miami is among the most desired places to move to, for yet another year.

New data from Remitly, found that Miami secured the third top spot on a global ranking of top alternative relocation destinations – beating out Dubai, which was last year’s most desired city.

To determine the most desired destinations, researchers used Google search data.

They searched all languages to establish the annual search volume – from June 2023 to May 2024 – in 98 countries for the term ‘move to [city]’. All capital cities and the most searched-for destinations in each country were removed, according to Remitly.

The next most searched-for location was used as the top destination for the specific country and the overall rankings were created by totaling how many times each city featured as the number one choice of another country, researchers noted.

The results revealed that 10 countries across the globe actually chose Miami as their top “alternative relocation capital.”

Miami was beat out by Barcelona, which secured the second top spot, and Vancouver, which was the first choice for 17 countries – ultimately making it No. 1 on the list.

The 10 countries that chose Miami as their top alternative relocation destination were Canada, Chile, Grenada, India, Malawi, Myanmar, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, data showed.

Remitly analysts said proximity to the sun and sea is on migrants’ minds when researching a new place to call home. They partially credit those factors for why Miami, Barcelona Dubai, and Valencia made the top five.

Miami also ranked as the No. 4 choice for Americans looking to move out-of-state.

Meanwhile, Kansas City was the No. 1 choice for people in the U.S., with 11 states choosing it as their top alternative relocation capital.

Chicago was No. 2 and Seattle was No. 3., while Charlotte secured the fifth top spot.

Judge dismisses lawsuit to remove Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo from office https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/judge-dismisses-lawsuit-to-remove-miami-commissioner-joe-carollo-from-office/3423202/ 3423202 post 9412895 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/03/Judge-dismisses-case-against-Miami-Commissioner-Joe-Carollo.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit seeking to remove Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo from office.

Little Havana business owners Bill Fuller and Martin Pinilla, who won a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the commissioner, filed the lawsuit back in June.

“The question is, who is going to uphold the City charter, the constitution of the City of Miami? The Florida Supreme Court states it is the circuit courts that are to do that,” said attorney Jeff Gutchess, who represents the businessmen.

The plaintiffs’ attorneys cite the “Miami’s Citizens’ Bill of Rights” under the city charter, which states that any public official or employee who is found by the court to have willfully violated a resident’s freedom of speech shall forfeit his or her employment.

“We stand by the judge’s well-reasoned order he was sued in the first case in his individual capacity,” attorney Christina Ceballos Levy said.

The lawsuit was based on the result of the case he lost against the businessmen in federal court. In his ruling, the judge noted he was sued as an individual. The plaintiffs’ attorney alleges by the very nature of the case, he was found guilty as a public official and the city is also liable.

“We believe the city will pay the $63 million,” Gutchess said. “We have filed another lawsuit against the city.

The judge also noted Fuller and Pinilla are not City of Miami residents.

Carollo did not attend the hearing Wednesday but spoke later from his district office.

“In every case they have against me or the city, they keep filing stuff, it’s nonstop,” he said.

He is confident he will win the appeal he has filed against the $63 million judgment against him.

“Lastly the judge told them, what if Mr. Carollo wins his appeal? You expect me to throw him out of office now? And if he wins the appeal then what happens?” Carollo said.

Malone Lam, 20, and 21-year-old Jeandiel Serrano, of Los Angeles, were arrested by the FBI Wednesday night, The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in a news release Thursday.

It appears the arrest is connected with an FBI raid of a waterfront home in the area of Northeast 83rd Street and N. Bayshore Drive.

Lam, who lives in Miami but is a citizen of Singapore and who goes by the online monikers “Anne Hathaway” and “$$$,” and Serrano, who uses “VersaceGod” and “@SkidStar,” had worked with others since at least August to carry out cryptocurrency thefts and to launder the stolen crypto currency through exchanges and mixing services, authorities said.

Malone Lam

After they fraudulently gained access to victims’ cryptocurrency accounts, they transferred the funds into their possession and laundered the proceeds, authorities said.

The funds were moved through various mixers and exchanges using “peel chains,” pass-through wallets, and virtual private networks (VPNs) to mask their true identities, the news release said.

In one instance, Lam, Serrano, and their conspirators contacted a victim in D.C. and, through the communications with that victim, fraudulently obtained over 4,100 Bitcoin, which was worth over $230 million at the time, authorities said.

Lam and Serrano spent the laundered cryptocurrency proceeds on international travel, partying in nightclubs, luxury automobiles, watches, jewelry, designer handbags, and rental homes in Los Angeles and Miami, authorities said.

Prosecutors said the investigation into the scam is ongoing.

Miami police said a few of their units were at the scene at NE 83rd Street and N Bayshore Drive for support purposes.

It was not immediately clear what the warrants were for, or how many potential people were detained.

Video of the scene appears to show police activity centering around a house at the intersection.

The FBI confirmed that their agents were in the vicinity of that location conducting court-ordered law enforcement activity.

NBC6 is working to learn more.

Miami woman reunited with dog missing for days after rollover crash on I-95 https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/miami-woman-reunited-with-dog-missing-for-days-after-rollover-crash-on-i-95/3421600/ 3421600 post 9895704 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/woman-reunited-with-dog-after-i95-crash.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Debbie Dawson said she was driving north in the express lanes on Interstate 95 on Saturday, as the regular lanes were in standstill traffic, when she saw a car cross over the pylons right in front of her.

“I saw her car coming and I just said, ‘I’m going to die,’ and honest to God, that’s all I remember,” she said. “And then I just remember waking up in the middle of 95.”

Dawson said she blacked out on impact, and later learned her car flipped over four times. The crash shattered her windows and that’s how her beloved puppy, a 15-month-old black Labrador named Moose, took off.

Her first instinct was to run after him, but a witness stopped her, cautious of her injuries.

“I didn’t care. I wasn’t thinking about myself, I just could think about him,” Dawson said, visibly emotional.

She was taken to the hospital, miraculously, with only minor injuries.

But Moose was missing for days. Although he normally wears an Apple AirTag, it came off during the crash, leaving his family unable to find him.

“We were riding around moments after we were done searching, it’s lightning and thunder and starting to rain and knowing this guy was out there, it was terrible,” Corey Dawson, Debbie’s husband, said.

Dawson’s children took to social media to circulate flyers, hoping someone would spot him.

“I was getting phone calls in the middle of the night, same as my dad, with people who were trying to join in and give us tips and tricks,” their son Walker Dawson said.

On Tuesday, they got the call they were waiting for.

Moose was found hiding in the brush off the highway about a mile from the crash site. His paw pads were raw from running on the hot pavement, and he was traumatized and scared, but otherwise OK.

The Oakland Park firefighters who were on the scene that day helped bring him home.

“They promised me that they would find him and they did, and I cannot, cannot thank them enough for all their work and hard effort, not giving up. They all deserve medals,” Debbie said, with Moose now snoozing contentedly on the couch between her and her husband.

The Dawsons are thankful their family is whole again, overwhelmed by the support and now sharing one message for drivers.

“The takeaway for me would be, because a lot of lives have been changed in this thing, is if you would just look when you’re driving, that’s the reality,” Corey Dawson said.

The Dawsons tell NBC6 they are still waiting on a crash report from Florida Highway Patrol.

Cuban singer Ovi arrested after video shows him pointing gun at Miami driver: Police https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/cuban-singer-ovi-arrested-after-video-shows-him-pointing-gun-at-miami-driver-police/3420698/ 3420698 post 9892715 Only in Dade https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/091824-Ovi-alleged-gun-pointed-in-mclaren-miami.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A famous Cuban singer is facing charges after police said he was caught on video pointing a gun at another driver from inside his McLaren in Miami.

Ovi, whose real name is Ovidio Crespo-Retureta, was arrested Tuesday on charge including aggravated assault with a firearm, improper exhibition of a firearm, and possession of a controlled substance-Percocet, records showed.

The alleged incident happened Monday afternoon on Tamiami Trail near the Florida’s Turnpike.

Ovi, also known as Ovidio Crespo-Retureta

According to an arrest report, the victim, Giuseppe Benignini, whose Instagram page lists him as a model, was driving next to an iridescent McLaren that was being followed by a black Lamborghini SUV.

The McLaren suddenly changed lanes into Benignini’s path, nearly hitting Benignini’s vehicle, the report said.

Benignini honked his horn and that’s when the driver of the McLaren pulled out a firearm and Benignini ducked, believing the driver was going to shoot him, the report said.

Moments later, Benignini pulled alongside the McLaren and the driver pointed the gun at him, the report said. Benignini took a video of the incident, which he posted to Instagram.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the singer Ovi took out a gun and threatened me here in Miami,” Benignini said in Spanish in the video. “When he pulls the gun out, I dodge and go into the other lane and quickly move up, and he drives up to my side. When he drives up to my side, he takes out the gun again through the window and points it at me like this. I thought he was going to shoot me.”

The footage was also posted to the Only in Dade Instagram page, where it had over 12,000 likes and 1,600 comments as of Wednesday morning.

The report said Benignini identified the driver as Ovi from his Instagram page, ovi_oficial, which features photos and videos of Ovi with the iridescent McLaren and a black Lamborghini SUV.

Benignini reported the incident to police, gave them the video and identified Ovi in a photo lineup, the report said.

NBC6 spoke with Benignini on Wednesday, who said he thought he was going to die.

“I was scared to death,” he said in Spanish. “Unfortunately it was him, and now ultimately justice will do what it’s supposed to do. I don’t have a say in what’s going to happen.”

Ovi was taken into custody Tuesday while driving a black Lamborghini Urus. Dashcam video shows Florida Highway Patrol troopers stopping the Lamborghini.

The singer had a black Sig Sauer handgun in his waistband, the report said. Authorities also found a backpack inside the Lamborghini containing two Percocet pills, the report said. A Taser found found on the SUV’s floorboard and a passenger had a Taser in his waistband, the report said.

The singer appeared in court Wednesday where a judge set his bond at $6,500. Prosecutors sought to have him not allowed to use firearms, but his defense attorney argued he should still be allowed to possess them, and the judge agreed.

Ovi, 28, is known for his reggaeton and Latin trap music and has nearly 3 million Instagram followers.

The video obtained by NBC6 on Tuesday shows the moments just before and after the deadly Aug. 10 crash that has 24-year-old Maecee Marie Lathers facing 10 charges that also include vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license and causing injury.

The crash happened at the intersection of N. Miami Avenue and N. 8th Street when police said Lathers crashed her white Mercedes into a black Range Rover and silver Suzuki, killing Abraham Molina and Jesus Rubio.

The video shows the Mercedes speeding down N. Miami Avenue just before the crash, and shows a woman who police said is Lather walking away from the scene and sitting on a sidewalk.

She later appears to follow along with a group of runners that head back in the direction of the crash.

Records show Lathers tried leaving the scene without helping or calling 911, but bystanders confronted her.

Police bodycam footage showed Lathers face down on the ground, topless, screaming and vomiting at the scene, and prosecutors said a toxicology report revealed a variety of drugs in her system.

Lathers told police she was on “tusi,” also known as pink cocaine, a party drug usually made of ketamine and other substances, officials said.

Arrest records said Lathers was traveling approximately 57 mph five seconds before the crash with the accelerator at 100%. The car then increased to 78 mph at the moment it crashed into another vehicle, records showed.

Lathers has pleaded not guilty. A judge on Monday ordered that she be held in jail without bond while she awaits trial.

Social media model charged with DUI manslaughter in Miami crash staying in jail https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/social-media-model-charged-with-dui-manslaughter-in-miami-crash-staying-in-jail/3418990/ 3418990 post 9887630 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/091624-Miami-crash-Maecee-Lathers.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A self-proclaimed social media model charged in a deadly Miami crash while she was allegedly on drugs was back in court Monday as she was seeking her release from jail.

Maecee Lathers is facing manslaughter charges. She’s accused of driving under the influence and killing two men in the crash on August 10th.

At Monday’s hearing, Judge Teresa Mary Pooler ordered the 24-year-old Lathers held in jail without bond to await her trial in November.

Booking photo of Maecee Marie Lathers

Also in court Monday, prosecutors played body camera and surveillance video of the aftermath of the violent crash. Lathers is heard telling an officer she took a party drug known as “tusi.”

A toxicology report confirmed her statement to police and noted a variety of drugs were in her system.

Lather’s attorney argued his client should be on house arrest because he felt the state did not present new evidence at Monday’s hearing.

“The only thing that the video has is what was already placed inside of the affidavit,” said Lather’s attorney.

Judge Pooler did not mince her words and called Lathers a danger to the community.

“As much as I respect house arrest, if someone wants to go they can go. It’s a simple matter of cutting that bracelet off and leaving,” said Pooler.

Family members for victims Abraham Molina and Jesus Rubio were emotional in court and grateful the judge ruled to keep Lathers behind bars.

“Justice is being served, although this case remains open,” said surviving victim Juana Hernandez.

Hernandez was also in the car with Molina and Rubio, but survived. She said hearing the video in court was difficult because she relived the nightmare, but believes it was necessary for the judge to watch.

“The judge did the right thing,” said Hernandez.

Dozens rally for reproductive rights at Bayfront Park in Miami https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/dozens-rally-for-reproductive-rights-at-bayfront-park-in-miami/3417875/ 3417875 post 9884843 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/Abortion-Rights-Rally-Miami.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Dozens gathered at Bayfront Park in Miami on Saturday to fight for reproductive freedom across Florida.

They’re pushing for people to vote ‘yes’ on Amendment 4, which would allow abortion access in the Sunshine State.

It would specifically allow the procedure to remain legal until the fetus is viable, which would be decided by a patient’s health care provider.

Local leaders such as Miami-Dade County’s Mayor – as well as residents of all ages – came out to echo the calls for change.

“When you see people coming together and when you see the impact that it has on people, it spreads awareness of issues,” a woman told NBC6.

“The right to choose for one’s body belongs to the person, who is going to make that choice – not to the government,” a man who attended the rally said.

Meanwhile, groups like Florida Right to Life are fighting Amendment 4, saying they want to protect the sanctity of life from conception, and are urging people to vote ‘no’ in November.

‘In the Air Tonight': Looking back at ‘Miami Vice,' which premiered 40 years ago https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/in-the-air-tonight-looking-back-at-miami-vice-which-premiered-40-years-ago/3409694/ 3409694 post 9882023 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/GettyImages-140941603.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 It’s time to toss that Versace suit over a pastel t-shirt, put espadrilles on your feet (no socks of course) and hop in the white Ferrari as the 40th anniversary of the premiere of “Miami Vice” is being celebrated this month.

The hit TV show premiered on Sept. 16, 1984 with the episode “Brother’s Keeper,” which later won two Emmys and started a legacy still felt to this day.

Audiences were introduced to James “Sonny” Crockett, played by Don Johnson, and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, played by Philip Michael Thomas, a pair of gritty Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami in sports cars, cigarette boats and designer threads to take down drug dealers, pimps and anyone else who got in their way.

The show not only changed television, it played a major role in Miami and Miami Beach’s transformation from a sleepy beachside haven for retirees, refugees and drug dealers to an international destination for fun and sun.

That first episode set the tone and showed “Miami Vice” would not be like every other cop show that came before it.

From the fast-paced opening credits with a distinctive and very 1980s Jan Hammer instrumental theme to the sounds of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” playing as Crockett and Tubbs drive a convertible through the streets of South Florida, the show sometimes dubbed “MTV cops” set itself apart.

MIAMI VICE LOGO

After the show premiered, Johnson and Thomas almost immediately became megastars. Tubbs’ quiet demeanor and coolness and Crockett’s lone wolf cop attitude and 5 o’clock shadow became just as culturally significant as the expensive suits they wore.

Johnson discussed the show’s impact in an interview with the Associated Press earlier this year.

“What we did was contemporize television, we all came from independent movies and stuff like that, so we just brought our sensibilities and our artistic tastes and freshness to television which was pretty staid, it’s not that way anymore, but it was pretty into its kind of programs, the doctor show, the cop show, the lawyer show,” he said. “And ‘Miami Vice’ turned out to be one of those that kind of pooled all of those talents of music and fashion and so on and so forth and we kind of contemporized TV by doing so.”

Besides Johnson and Thomas, the series helped launch the careers of a number of actors. The list of guest stars who had a brief role on the show reads like a who’s who of Hollywood from the past four decades: Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis, Liam Neeson and many others.

The list of music stars who appeared on the show is also impressive. Everyone from Willie Nelson to Miles Davis and even Barbra Streisand showed up on “Vice.”

While the cars, clothes and cinematography stood out, the real star of the show might be the location, specifically South Beach.

When the show started South Beach was mostly run down and not the hot spot it later came to be. The party atmosphere was almost non-existent, the famous Art Deco buildings looking long past their prime.

But each week, “Vice” viewers were transported to the sunny beaches, the hip night clubs and the tropical locales portrayed in the show.

As the Art Deco buildings were fixed up to be backdrops for the show and tourists flocked to South Florida to be part of the action, the show in many ways helped shape the area’s revitalization.

Now, South Beach probably more closely resembles the playground for locals and tourists portrayed in “Miami Vice.”

LEGACY OF “VICE”

“Miami Vice” only ran for five seasons, ending in 1989. But the show’s legacy lives on.

Most of the fashion from the show may have gone out of style, but the bright colors still remain, whether it’s the neon on the South Beach buildings or the need to drive a brightly colored sports car up and down U.S. 1.

The “Miami Vice” style has inspired everything from video games like “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City” to the pink and blue Miami Heat Vice jerseys.

It also inspired the 2006 “Miami Vice” movie, directed by Michael Mann, a former executive producer of the show, and starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the Crockett and Tubbs roles – and featuring a brief cameo from NBC6 meteorologist Ryan Phillips.

NBC6’s Ryan Phillips in the 2006 “Miami Vice” movie.

And those gritty TV shows everyone watches nowadays can also trace their origins back to “Miami Vice,” as does the stylized use of music in shows.

To honor the 40th anniversary of the show, Miami Beach’s mayor has issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 16 “Miami Vice Day.”

A number of events are being held to celebrate the global phenomenon, including meet and greet with some of the show’s stars, walking tours of some of the filming locations and visits to the “Miami Vice Museum.”

Edward James Olmos, who starred in the show, was in town to be part of the celebrations and reflected on the show’s meaning.

“We’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of an unbelievable journey that we took here from 1984 through 1989 that changed the course of not only my career, not only the career of many many many Latinos and people that became understanding of who they are,” he said. “It really was the start of understanding the city of Miami and South Miami Beach.”

Carlos M. Garcia-Ajete, 40, and Nivaldo J. Garcia-Vento, 41, were suspects in the ring, which has been stealing from major retailers including Publix, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and Winn Dixie, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

Before their arrests, authorities had been informed that the men might have left Martin County to commit similar thefts in Collier.

On Wednesday afternoon, deputies found a vehicle matching the description of the brown GMC SUV that the suspects were believed to be driving leaving a Walmart at 6650 Collier Boulevard.

Deputies said the driver ran a red light, and they conducted a traffic stop. That’s when Garcia-Ajete allegedly ran from the vehicle. He was caught after a short chase.

“The pair told deputies they were coming from Fort Myers. Suspecting that was a lie and that the pair had just committed retail theft at the Walmart, deputies reviewed the store’s security video footage,” a statement from the sheriff’s office details. “The video showed Garcia-Vento in the personal care section of the store, grabbing a Gillette Razor pack which he concealed on his person, and then leaving the store without paying.”

Two Miami men caught with thousands of dollars worth of stolen merchandise in Collier County, including 400 sticks of deodorant, are accused of being part of an organized retail theft ring that stole goods from all across Florida.

Both men were arrested.

When authorities checked the vehicle, they found quite the haul: six large trash bags filled with suspected stolen merchandise, including 400 sticks of deodorant, razor blades, razors, fishing gear, cosmetics and other items valued at nearly $5,000.

Deputies also allegedly found a device commonly used to remove magnetic store security devices.

Garcia-Vento and Garcia-Ajete are both charged with multiple felonies, including grand theft. Garcia-Vento is currently out on bond on retail theft charges out of Palm Beach County, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

6 South Florida men busted in Lamborghini carjacking and kidnapping in Connecticut https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/6-south-florida-men-busted-in-lamborghini-carjacking-and-kidnapping-in-connecticut/3415982/ 3415982 post 9879023 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/GettyImages-1664509334.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A group of six South Florida men are facing federal charges in connection with the violent armed carjacking and kidnapping of a couple in a Lamborghini in Connecticut.

Angel Borrero, Josue Alberto Romero, Michael Rivas and Ricardo Estrada, all from Miami, Anthony Pena from Miami Gardens, and Reynaldo Diaz of Belle Glade, are facing carjacking and conspiracy charges, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut said Thursday.

The crime happened back on Aug. 25 in Danbury, when police responded to multiple 911 calls from people who witnessed the carjacking.

Prosecutors said the man and woman were in a Lamborghini Urus that was rear-ended by a Honda Civic before a white work van cut in front of them.

The victims were forcibly removed from their vehicle, dragged into the van, and bound with duct tape, while they were repeatedly told they would be killed.

When the male victim began to resist, he was punched in the face and hit with a baseball bat, authorities said.

Officers who responded to the 911 calls spotted the van and tried to stop it, but it sped away, officials said.

The van eventually crashed, and officers found the two victims inside, both bound with duct tape. The man had significant injuries to his face and arm, and both victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Borrero, Romero, Pena, and Diaz were captured in the area near where the van crashed. Rivas and Estrada, and the Honda Civic that rear-ended the Lamborghini, were located at a short-term rental home nearby, authorities said.

The Lamborghini was found abandoned in a wooded area.

It is alleged that the 23-year-old Borrero, known as “Chi Chi,” organized, paid for, and booked flights for the six suspects to travel from Florida to commit the crime, authorities said.

The conspiracy charges carry a maximum of five years in prison, while the carjacking charges carry a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years.

An investigation involving the FBI New Haven Violent Crimes Task Force and the Danbury Police Department is ongoing.

Bodycam shows social media model screaming, vomiting after allegedly causing deadly crash https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/bodycam-social-media-model-miami-crash/3414982/ 3414982 post 9875919 Miami Police https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/THUMBNAIL-MODEL-ARREST.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Police body camera footage shows the moments after a self-proclaimed social media model allegedly drove drugged on “pink cocaine” and caused a crash that killed two people in downtown Miami.

Prosecutors recently charged Maecee Marie Lathers with DUI manslaughter in the August 10 crash after toxicology reports found a variety of drugs in her system. She also faces charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and causing injury.

The bodycam footage shows Lathers, 24, face down on the ground, topless, screaming and vomiting after she allegedly crashed her white Mercedes into two other vehicles and killed Abraham Molina and Jesus Rubio.

Records show Lathers tried leaving the scene without helping or calling 911, but bystanders confronted her.

“I’m from the future,” she’s heard telling officers in the bodycam.

At one point, an officer asks, “Are you on drugs?”

The officer later radios in: “She just told us now she’s on tusi.”

Tusi, also known as pink cocaine, is a party drug usually made of ketamine and other substances.

Soon after, paramedics arrive to transport her to the hospital.

“The aliens…they’re coming,” Lathers says as they load her onto a stretcher.

Lathers, who had been on house arrest, returned to jail Tuesday after prosecutors tacked on new DUI manslaughter charges. She will get a chance to ask for a bond next week, while state attorneys will oppose any form of release.

Dad and son sold counterfeit luxury goods at Miami store, had $3M in fake merch: Police https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/dad-and-son-sold-counterfeit-luxury-goods-at-miami-store-had-3m-in-fake-merch-police/3414968/ 3414968 post 9875803 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/GettyImages-1224212189.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A father and son duo are facing charges after police said they sold counterfeit luxury handbags and other items out of their Miami store where investigators found a treasure trove of around $3 million in phony items, officials said.

Giovanni Tummolillo Sr. 72, and Giovanni Tummolillo Jr., 40, are facing multiple charges involving selling counterfeit merchandise, arrest reports said.

Tummolillo Jr. was arrested back on Aug. 23, while his father was arrested at Miami International Airport on Tuesday, records showed.

Giovanni Tummolillo Sr. and Giovanni Tummolillo Jr.

According to the arrest reports, the pair sold the items out of their business, Leather Goods LLC on Southeast 2nd Avenue in Miami.

The counterfeit items for sale included luxury brand goods like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, hermes, Gucci, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Prada, YSL, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, and Tiffany, the reports said.

On March 8, Miami Police detectives working with Homeland Security Investigations made a controlled purchase at the business using a confidential informant.

The informant met with Tummolillo Jr. and checked out the merchandise, picking out a Louis Vuitton fanny pack and duffle bag that were bought for a negotiated price of $1,150, the reports said.

On March 20, another controlled purchase was made for a blue Fendi bag, a red Hermes purse, Louis Vuitton footwear, Dita sunglasses and Christian Louboutin heels.

Tummolillo Jr. provided a total for the items of $1,750, which was paid by the informant, the reports said.

On July 2, another controlled purchase was made, this time for a Louis Vuitton bookbag, a Louis Vuitton duffle, a Louis Vuitton purse, a Hermes purse, Gucci sandals, Hermes dress shoes, a Cartier bracelet, a Hermes belt, and a Louis Vuitton belt, for a purchase price of $3,200.

A licensed private investigator who works as a trademark representative for Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Cartier, Gucci and Van Cleef & Arpels determined the items purchased were counterfeit, and the brands’ in-house trademark experts also verified that the items were counterfeit, the reports said.

A search warrant was executed at the business and around $3 million worth of counterfeit merchandise was recovered, the reports said.

Also recovered was equipment used to make the merchandise.

Tummolillo Sr. and Tummolillo Jr. were both booked into jail. Attorney information wasn’t available.

Man dies, 3 officers on administrative duty after police shooting in Miami https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/man-critically-injured-in-shooting-involving-police-in-miami/3413896/ 3413896 post 9872404 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/091024-miami-police-shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A man died and three officers were placed on administrative duty after a confrontation and police shooting Tuesday in Miami.

The shooting happened at around 4:30 p.m. in the area of the 1400 block of Northwest 67th Street near Liberty City.

The Miami Police Department’s Tactical Robbery Unit and the Crime Gun Intelligence Center were conducting surveillance in the area when they encountered a man who they had been looking for since Sunday.

“About 10-12 shots that were fired that were caught by one of our cameras in the area, that led the detectives to identify the offender as being the individual responsible,” Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said of Sunday’s incident.

After a confrontation, the three officers fired their guns, officials said.

“They made contact with him coming out of one of the markets. As they approached the offender, a foot pursuit ensued, at which time there was a confrontation in the back of the apartment complex,” Morales said.

NBC6 captured video of what appeared to be a gun on the sidewalk. Police said the person they were chasing did have a gun on him, but it’s unclear if he fired the gun at the officers.

Miami Fire Rescue officials said the man was taken to Ryder Trauma Center from the scene in critical condition.

He later died at the hospital. Officials haven’t identified him.

Police said the officers weren’t injured.

Footage from the scene showed multiple officers outside an apartment complex, with one area in the parking lot closed off by yellow crime scene tape.

What appears to be a handgun is seen on a sidewalk after a police shooting in Miami that left a man dead.

The three officers were placed on administrative duty, which is standard practice in police shootings.

No other information was immediately available.

Miami man arrested after dating app meet-up ends in violent kidnapping and robbery https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/miami-man-arrested-after-dating-app-meet-up-ends-in-violent-kidnapping-and-robbery/3412603/ 3412603 post 5820777 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2021/02/cellphone-generic-dark.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 At least one arrest has been made after a man’s meet-up with a woman he met on a dating app ended with him being kidnapped and violently robbed in Miami, police said.

Robert Andre Maytin, 20, was arrested Friday on charges of armed kidnapping, armed robbery, and unlawful use of a debit card, records showed.

Robert Andre Maytin

According to an arrest report, the victim met a woman on the dating app BLK on July 18.

They had agreed to meet that day at the victim’s home but while the victim was waiting on her arrival, he received a Facetime call from her that her vehicle was broken down and she needed $800 to have it towed.

The victim agreed and when she arrived at his home he gave her $600.

The next day, July 19, the woman contacted the victim and asked if he wanted to go out and he agreed, but when the woman arrived she was in a white SUV with a man driving and Maytin sitting in the back, the report said.

The victim got in the SUV and sat next to Maytin, and they started driving around, possibly in the Wynwood area.

They eventually stopped near a park where Maytin pulled out a knife and demanded the victim give him his money, wallet and cellphone, the report said.

Maytin then punched the victim in the face and demanded the victim send him money through Cashapp, the report said.

The victim sent $393, but they demanded more money and drove him to an ATM on Northwest 14th Avenue where several ATM transactions occurred totaling over $1,000.

The victim said he was “under duress” while Maytin watched him make the withdrawals, the report said.

A short time later, the suspects dropped the victim off at an unknown location and he walked until he arrived at Baptist Health Urgent Care on Southwest 136th Street where he sought treatment for the injuries to his face.

Bank statements showed several other ATM transactions took place on July 20 totaling $700.

Miami Police were able to get photos from the ATM surveillance cameras and used facial recognition to get a possible match and on Sept. 4, the victim picked Maytin out of a photo lineup as the man who robbed him, the report said.

Maytin was booked into jail. He appeared before a judge over the weekend where he was ordered held without bond.

The arrest report didn’t say if police were looking for the woman who met the victim on the app or the man who was driving the SUV.

7-year-old girl dies days after she was hit by car outside Miami pharmacy https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/7-year-old-girl-dies-days-after-she-was-hit-by-car-outside-miami-pharmacy/3411205/ 3411205 post 9857313 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/image-2024-09-04T183238.245.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A 7-year-old girl died days after she was struck by a car outside a pharmacy in Miami.

The father of Stephanie Alonso confirmed the news to NBC6 on Friday.

Alonso was involved in the accident on Monday afternoon while walking with her mother outside the Navarro Discount Pharmacy on Southwest 32nd Avenue and Coral Way.

The elderly driver accidentally accelerated instead of applying the brakes, striking the young girl, Miami Police said.

“She hit my daughter, and she hit the wall,” her father Joany Figueredo said in an interview earlier this week. “She got out of the car and acted like nothing happened.”

Emergency medical responders transported Alonso to the hospital with severe head injuries in critical condition.

The father spoke about the broader issue of elderly drivers on the road.

“What is happening? Why is a person who is 92 years old driving? There should be an age limit for driving,” he said.

Florida does not have a specific age cap on driving, according to the Miami Herald.

Police said the driver remained on scene and charges are pending.

‘I always represent 305': Miami's ‘TeeTee' Terry on Olympic gold, dad pushing her not to quit https://www.nbcmiami.com/paris-2024-summer-olympics/miamis-teetee-terry-on-olympic-gold-father-pushing-her-not-to-quit/3410967/ 3410967 post 9863871 Getty Images, NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/090624-twanisha-teetee-terry.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Miami has a new Golden Girl, and her name is Twanisha “TeeTee” Terry. The Olympic sprinter, a Miami native, recently returned to South Florida after the Paris Olympic Games with some impressive hardware.

After an amazing performance in the women’s 4×100 relay, Terry won Olympic gold.

“It feels amazing. I’m always representing South Florida. I always represent 305, Miami, Northwest,” Terry told NBC6.

Terry’s journey to Olympic glory started in 2009, while running track at Miami Northwestern Senior High School.

But the path to Olympic stardom wasn’t easy. She faced moments of doubt, moments when quitting seemed easier than pushing through the grueling training.

“I remember one day wanting to quit, and my dad left his job, came out to the track, stretched my legs, and said, ‘Now get up and run,'” she said.

That push, and Terry’s resilience, paid off. Now, with the weight of Olympic gold draped around her neck, she’s beginning to reflect on the significance of her achievements.

Earlier this week, Terry was honored with a proclamation by the City of Miami and presented with the prestigious key to Miami-Dade County.

“A lot of people recognize me here in Miami. It feels great to see my hard work pay off,” she said.

Beyond the track, Terry’s influence stretches far. She remains connected to her roots, staying in touch with her high school coach, Carmen Jackson, whom she now affectionately calls “grandma.”

As much as she’s looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, her true passion lies in giving back to her community.

Through her initiative, Readers on the Run, Terry is working to inspire the next generation, encouraging kids to embrace the joys of reading by gifting books to students across the Miami-Dade school system.

She’s a role model, proving that success doesn’t end at the finish line.

Later this fall, Terry will be honored at the White House alongside her fellow Olympians and Paralympians, where she’ll receive her coveted Olympic ring.

New evidence shows Venezuelan politician ran red light before deadly Miami hit-and-run: Police https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/venezuelan-politician-ran-red-light-before-deadly-miami-hit-and-run-police/3410386/ 3410386 post 9849918 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/image-1-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all New evidence reveals that a Venezuelan politician arrested after allegedly leaving the scene of a three-vehicle crash that left a man dead and a woman hurt in Miami had run a red light, and the deceased victim actually had a green light, Miami Police said.

Dashcam video from the third car involved contradicted the initial police report, which described that the victim,  29-year-old Junior Eugene, was the one who ran a red light.

Gilber Caro, a Venezuelan politician and three-time political prisoner, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death in the incident that happened around 3:40 a.m. Monday, records showed. He will now be facing new, unspecified charges, police said.

According to an arrest report, the 50-year-old Caro was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe westbound on 8th Street approaching Southwest 42nd Avenue and Eugene, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, was going southbound on Southwest 42nd Avenue approaching Southwest 8th Street.

Caro allegedly hit Eugene, and the Sonata then collided with a third vehicle and a palm tree, according to that arrest report. Footage from the scene showed the vehicles heavily damaged.

City of Miami Fire Rescue responded and found Eugene dead at the scene, while a woman who was driving the third car was transported to Coral Gables Hospital in stable condition.

Caro fled the scene on foot, leaving the victim and his vehicle abandoned, police said. Caro did not render aid or call for assistance prior to fleeing, the report said.

His name and phone number, however, were found on a food order on a paper bag of restaurant Moshi Moshi, police said. He also received a text from the registered owner of the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving about a sushi order and asking him where he was.

Hours after the crash, at around 7:00 a.m., Caro contacted the owner of the vehicle and told her he was involved in the accident that took place earlier that same day that involved her vehicle, according to the report.

Caro asked her to call 911, and he was arrested at 9:20 a.m. before he was booked into jail.

The arrest report said Caro is a Venezuelan citizen but has an address in Miami.

Venezuelan political party Voluntad Popular posted on their “X” account about his arrest.

“We have been informed that Gilber Caro, former political prisoner and deputy elected in 2015, was involved in a traffic accident in the last few hours in the United States and is in the custody of authorities in that country after what happened,” the post read. “Given that these are events in full development, we are waiting for more information about the case, understanding that the United States is a country in which there is the rule of law and due process to clarify what happened. We will inform you of any news about this case.”

NBC6 Responds after small Miami towing business has Google profile shut down https://www.nbcmiami.com/responds/nbc6-responds-after-small-towing-services-google-business-profile-disappears-online/3408952/ 3408952 post 9857819 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/34173213601-1080pnbcstations.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A digital footprint is the lifeblood of success for many small businesses, but one local business says they became unsearchable when their online profile disappeared.

Daiana Maza and her father Ernesto Maza run Towing Miami Express, a small towing service in Miami.

For the last four years, they have seen a steady stream of customers, in part due to the use of an online Google business profile.

“Google is the most powerful engine of the world right now,” Daiana Maza said.

For many small businesses, Google business profiles have become an invaluable marketing tool. It allows for customers to see the business’ location, customer reviews and contact information. It also helps the business show up in search results.

But the most powerful tool in their arsenal stopped working a little more than a month ago when their Google profile was shut down.

In an email from Google, they were told their business didn’t meet the requirements to have a profile.

“Nobody could find us, and we literally lost like 99 percent of our work,” Daiana Maza said.

That same email offered Daiana and Ernesto the chance to appeal Google’s decision, a process they participated in by sending emails with Google employees and sending over paperwork related to their business.

But when days turned to weeks, they started to worry.

“It was five weeks, and we were already pretty much bankrupt, so we were desperate, and we had no other choice,” Daiana Maza said.

That’s when they contacted NBC6 Responds.

“We are about to lose our house, we are about to lose our cars, we are about to lose our trucks, the employees, like everything,” Daiana Maza said.

We reached out to Google. In a statement, a company spokesperson told us: “We reviewed this case in detail and are working with the business to help them make some necessary edits to their profile. We aim to resolve issues in a helpful and timely way and are always improving how we do that.”

Within days, the business profile was back up and searchable online, but we never got a direct answer as to why it was taken down in the first place.

According to information Google provides online, they have guidelines for how businesses should represent themselves and these rules are enforced using automation, human review and user feedback.

Though their profile is back up and is searchable, their profile currently does not have the years’ worth of customer reviews it once had. We reached out to Google about that, and Maza says they are still working to get those incorporated into their Google profile.

‘We're the only family he has': Coworkers rally to help man injured in crash in Miami https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/coworkers-rally-to-help-man-injured-in-crash-in-miami/3408840/ 3408840 post 9857935 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/Angello-de-Santis-Nobman.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A man who moved to South Florida just a few years ago is fighting to stay alive after he was in a serious accident Sunday morning in Miami.

Alex Martinez, the owner of On The Run Vegan, said when he’s not around, his head cook Angello de Santis Nobman is the go-to guy.

“He’s been with me since day one,” Martinez said. “He’s like a brother, he’s not just an employee he’s a brother.”

De Santis Nobman was on his motorcycle Sunday morning when he got in a crash with an SUV at Southwest 8th Avenue and 7th Street in Miami.

Martinez said de Santis Nobman is currently in a coma in the hospital.

De Santis Nobman moved to Miami from Venezuela several years ago and has no family in South Florida.

“He came here and he works and he supports his family in Venezuela,” Martinez said. “We’re the only family he has.”

De Santis Nobman’s mother and 10-year-old currently live in Venezuela. She spoke with NBC6 via Zoom Wednesday.

“They set up the phone with video call so I could talk to him and of course, I told him I love him, that he’s going to get out the hospital, that we’ll be together soon and his family is waiting for him, that he’s not alone, that he’s going to see that the almighty God is healing and protecting him,” Massiel Lita Nobman De De Santis said.

She’s had to authorize other people to fill out paperwork at the hospital since she’s not there. However, she’s grateful for her son’s friends in South Florida.

“I have to go because he’s my son, I have to take care of him 24 hours a day,” she said. “He’s alone, he doesn’t have a partner, he’s not married. He has a child, she’s with me. She’s a minor, I’m her mother.”

Martinez is now trying to raise money to bring De Santis Nobman’s mother and daughter to South Florida to be by his side. He said he knows his friend would do the same for him.

“He’s a fighter, he’s been fighting all of his life and I don’t expect anything less,” Martinez said.

It’s not known who was at fault for the crash. Miami Police said the crash report is not available right now.

Martinez set up a GoFundMe to help the family.

7-year-old girl fights for her life after she's hit by car outside Miami pharmacy https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/girl-fights-for-her-life-after-shes-hit-by-car-outside-miami-pharmacy/3408665/ 3408665 post 9857313 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/image-2024-09-04T183238.245.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital are fighting to save the life of a 7-year-old girl who is critically injured after being struck by a vehicle driven by an elderly woman in Miami.

The girl, identified as Stephanie Alonso, was involved in the accident on Monday afternoon while walking with her mother outside the Navarro Discount Pharmacy on Southwest 32nd Avenue and Coral Way.

According to Joany Figueredo, Stephanie’s father, the girl’s mother is too traumatized to speak following the incident.

“I received a call from her mother — when I arrived at the hospital and saw my daughter in this condition,” Figueredo said. “I thought that wasn’t her.”

A Miami Police report said that around 4 p.m. as Stephanie and her mother were walking, the elderly driver accidentally accelerated rather than applying the brakes, striking the young girl.

“She hit my daughter, and she hit the wall,” Figueredo said. “She got out of the car and acted like nothing happened.”

Emergency medical responders transported Stephanie to the hospital with severe head injuries in critical condition.

“The main concern right now is about the head,” Figueredo said. “Her medical condition right now — we don’t know what is going to happen.”

The father expressed concern not only about his daughter’s condition, but also about the broader issue of elderly drivers on the road.

“What is happening? Why is a person who is 92 years old driving? There should be an age limit for driving,” he said.

As the family remains hopeful, they are calling for changes to improve safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Police said the driver remained on scene and charges are pending.

The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to aid in Stephanie’s hopeful recovery.

How much for a cocktail?! A night out in Miami is among most expensive in US, report says https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/how-much-for-a-cocktail-a-night-out-in-miami-is-among-most-expensive-in-us-report-says/3405332/ 3405332 post 9846355 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/08/GettyImages-586033298.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 How much is too much for a watered down mojito and a ride to the bar?

That’s up to you. But if your budget for the former is under $20, you may just want to stay home.

QR Code Generator recently researched and ranked the most expensive cities in the U.S. for a night out, and Miami was in the top 10.

The company factored in the price of taxis, a cocktail in a downtown club, beer in a neighborhood pub and a combo meal in a fast food restaurant to try to come up with a sum for an evening out on the town, and then assigned cities a final score out of 100.

The rankings

Miami is #9 in the list of cities ranked from most to least expensive night out.

But whether that’s reassuring or concerning is up for debate. An evening in any of these 10 cities will set you back a pretty penny.

Here’s the whole list:

  1. New York City, NY
  2. Washington, DC
  3. San Diego, CA
  4. San Francisco, CA
  5. Boston, MA
  6. Seattle, WA
  7. Los Angeles, CA
  8. Fresno, CA
  9. Miami, FL
  10. San Jose, CA

How much money are we talking?

Let’s break it down.

“In Miami, beer is $7 a pint, combo meals are $13 each, and at $20, cocktails are more expensive than anywhere else in the country except New York City,” QR Code Generator’s report says.

Ouch. But hey, the data says that the Magic City is saving on taxi fares. This is the fifth cheapest place to catch a cab, with fares at just $1.30 per kilometer, according to the report.

That’s how Miami’s score comes in at 61.73 out of 100, which feels significantly better next to New York City’s 93.45.

I remember when a good drink was $10

So do people in Memphis, Tennessee. Because that was last night.

“Memphis has the cheapest nightlife in the country, with a score of 8.14,” the company writes. “It costs $1.37 per kilometer to get a taxi downtown, where you can buy a cocktail for just $10 (tied for the third cheapest in the country) and a pint of beer for $4.43 (the fourth cheapest in the country).”

City of Miami police officers said they responded to the area of SW 23rd Avenue and 8th Street at around 3:50 a.m. to investigate a reported kidnapping.

A mother said she parked her 2021 silver Nissan Versa along the side of the street to find a friend, and then recognized some of the friend’s acquaintances went to speak with them.

She left her children, ages 1, 10 and 12 asleep inside for just a few minutes, police said.

“When she returned moments later, she discovered that her vehicle had been stolen,” according to an arrest report.

In less than an hour, police said they found the vehicle with the children left unharmed inside at Beacon Boulevard and SW 6th Street.

Then, authorities set up a perimeter and found a man fitting the description of the suspect at SW 27th Avenue and W Flagler Street. Video of the scene shows police presence outside the Walgreens at that address.

Noel Castro, 26, was arrested and charged with kidnapping, grand theft of a vehicle, burglary of an occupied conveyance and child abuse without great bodily harm.

According to the arrest report, one of the children said she woke up and noticed the man in the driver’s seat.

Castro allegedly said, “I got something for you” and removed his shirt.

He then fled west, the arrest report states.

Police said surveillance footage captured Castro getting into the car and driving away, and after he was arrested, he allegedly provided a full confession.

“The primary concern in this distressing incident was the safety and well-being of the children,” police said. “The quick and coordinated efforts of all officers involved ensured a swift recovery. We are thankful that the children were unharmed and that the suspect responsible was promptly apprehended.”

This is a developing story. Refresh for updates.

Miami is the rudest city in the US, survey says https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/miami-is-the-rudest-city-in-the-us-survey-says/3404230/ 3404230 post 8091135 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2023/04/Miami-Skyline.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Well, this news isn’t exactly shocking, is it?

The City of Miami, iconic for countless reasons, apparently attracts tourists around the worldwide despite its prickly reputation.

A new survey from language-learning site Preply ranked dozens of U.S. cities from most to least rude. Miami was in the top two–and it wasn’t number two.

And apparently, Miamians know it, since surveyed residents (along with those in Oakland, Calif., and Tucson, Ariz.) said people in their city are ruder than those in any other.

But before you storm off and roll your eyes, there are some interesting details to unpack here. Such as, what makes a city rude? Who’s ruder, locals or transplants? And if we’re the most ill-tempered—who’s the nicest?

Read on to find out.

The recipe for rudeness

Fifteen different rude behaviors came up during Preply’s survey, three of which stuck out in Miami: lack of awareness in public, loudness in shared places and rudeness to service staff members.

We scored a 9.88 out of 10 on the rudeness scale. Yikes.

While Preply doesn’t go into detail about its data (such as the frequency of a specific rude behavior), we’re going to go ahead and assume that the drivers in Miami don’t exactly get a passing grade here either.

“Rude drivers are common across America, as 6 in 10 say they’ve witnessed drivers in their city ignore basic rules of the road and not slow down or be cautious around pedestrians,” the study’s conclusions says. “While on their city’s roadways, residents say rude drivers most commonly prevent others from merging, and they also drive to a closed lane to merge closer to the front.”

Other impolite behaviors noticed across the country include not respecting personal space or hygiene, not acknowledging strangers and watching videos or listening to music out loud in shared spaces.

Want to see which of these you may unknowingly be guilty of? See them all here.

When you say we’re rude, who exactly are you talking about?

Preply “found that the length of time someone has lived in the city can influence how others perceive their rudeness.”

So you can put that debate to rest with your friend who recently moved here: “Transplant residents are also thought to be more rude by both natives and transplants themselves,” the study says.

But it’s not just us, right?

Oh, no! We’re in good (terrible) company here in Florida.

Tampa is the third-rudest city of the dozens ranked, with a score of 8.88.

And we bumped Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the no. 2 spot with its score of 9.12. It came in as rudest in 2022. But that was when Miami wasn’t even included in the survey.

Alright, well, who’s the least rude?

San Diego, Calif. scored a 6.68 on the rudeness scale. Minneapolis, Minn., did a bit better at 6.35. And Omaha, Neb., clinched the title of least rude with a 6.24.

“Whether you’re experiencing the midwestern charm in Omaha, neighborly support in Minneapolis, or the friendly laid-back reputation of those in San Diego, these cities generally exhibit a welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors,” Preply concludes.

So what do you think? Are you packing your bags, or is politeness overrated anyway?

For those who aren’t going anywhere but would like to live a little more neighborly, Preply suggests remembering that you’re not the center of the universe.

“So the next time you find yourself out in public, whether it is in the city you call home or while visiting somewhere else, try taking time to learn more about their language and cultural differences,” Preply says. “Even if you are not directly rude to someone, the things you do and say while around other people can still cause others to feel annoyed or even uncomfortable. So whether you are a resident of a rude city or not, remember to be aware of those around you.”

‘Heartbreaking': Botanic garden in Little Haiti facing critical deadline in fight against development https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/miami-tropical-botanic-garden-fight-against-development/3403469/ 3403469 post 9840799 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/08/Botanic-garden-in-Little-Haiti-at-risk-of-sale-to-developers.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The beloved Miami Tropical Botanic Garden in Little Haiti is, once again, on the brink of disappearing as developers eye the 3-acre site for luxury condos.

It is the last open greenspace of its size in Little Haiti, as the area meets the same fate as other Miami neighborhoods including Wynwood and the Design District.

The director of the nonprofit botanic garden, Casey Zap, said they were able to buy some time from the initial June deadline by securing an agreement with the owner. But the new deadline to raise $4 million is likely just months away.

“We have this limited timeframe and a limited opportunity for us to do something positive for our community that’s going to be here after we’re gone, and if we don’t do it now, it’s going to be gone forever,” Zap said.

The Miami Tropical Botanic Garden has several trails, hideaways, a massive greenhouse, a large pond with a fountain and a slew of wildlife.

“There’s just nothing else like it… a functioning ecosystem within the urban core,” Zap said. “I mean, it’s paradise. The idea it could become more condos in light of what you see here today, it’s heartbreaking.”

District 5 Commissioner Christine King recently spoke out about green spaces in her district but stopped short of mentioning the botanic garden. In a statement sent to NBC6, she said:

“Green spaces are an integral part of every community, especially in concrete jungles. These pockets of nature are vital for our emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. It is our collective responsibility to ensure generations to come will have green spaces to enjoy. I have championed community vegetable gardens in District 5 including one in Liberty City and one in Overtown. I am intentional in my efforts to preserve and curate green spaces such as the Rev. Edward T. Graham Greenway in Overtown. Naturally, when I heard about the potential of another green space in District 5, I was excited. Although that project did not happen, I am hopeful that we will identify more green spaces for the Little Haiti community. Gardens offer a place for the community to enjoy nature, provide an opportunity to address food insecurities, and create an educational component for our children to learn about nature and how to respect it.”

Zap said the next potential deadline will come in October.

While rumors swirl over developers wanting to fill in the pond to build luxury housing, a specific developer hasn’t been identified.

Zap told NBC6 that the owner of the land is neutral on the issue and is willing to sell the property to the nonprofit if they can come up with the funds.

Alberto Rabanal, 57, was arrested Monday on two counts of grand theft, records showed.

According to an arrest report, the victim had arrived at MIA on Aug. 22 on a flight from Lisbon, Portugal.

He cleared customs and was on the second level of Terminal J where he was waiting for a ride share when someone removed his duty-free bag that he left unattended for a short time, the report said.

The bag contained two Rolex watches valued at around $60,000.

Surveillance video showed an employee of a cleaning services company approach the bag and look inside.

He was seen removing a sweater before he found a black case holding the two Rolexes, then removed the watches from the bag and put the sweater back inside

He then put the duty-free bag inside a regular garbage bag then threw it in a garbage can, the report said.

The employee in the video was later identified as Rabanal, the report said.

Detectives went to Rabanal’s home where he led them to the watches, which were on top of his dresser, the report said.

He confessed to the theft and was arrested and booked into jail.

In court Tuesday, Rabanal was granted a $7,500 bond and appointed a public defender.

Alexander Perez Piloto, 38, was arrested on burglary and voyeurism charges, Miami Police officials said Wednesday.

After footage of the incident was released by NBC6 and other media outlets, Perez Piloto was confronted by a family member and turned himself in to Hialeah Police on Monday, officials said.

Police had initially received a call of a man peeking through the window of an apartment in the area of Southwest 10th Street and Southwest 7th Avenue the morning of Aug. 21.

A surveillance camera captured the man walking in and looking around before starting to peer into windows and touch his private parts.

According to an arrest affidavit, a 30-year-old woman and her three young children were inside the home, and the mother saw the man in the window.

The man was startled by a light that turned on and he fled in a black Honda Civic that was parked nearby, police said.

Perez Piloto was booked into jail and was expected to appear in bond court Wednesday. Attorney information wasn’t available.

Miami ends civilian police oversight, citing new state law https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/miami-ends-civilian-police-oversight-citing-new-state-law/3402419/ 3402419 post 6772379 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2022/01/011122-Miami-Police-generic.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 For more than 20 years, Miami Police have had an extra set of eyes – civilian eyes – watching over how it investigates officers accused of misconduct.

But soon that oversight will be no more.

Miami’s Civilian Investigative Panel is being dissolved effective Sept. 30, after Gov. Ron DeSantis and the legislature imposed a statewide ban on citizen oversight of police misconduct.

Miami’s citizens voted overwhelmingly to create the CIP in 2001 after a series of controversial police shootings and criminal activity.

But those efforts were undone in April when DeSantis signed a bill banning “civilian oversight of law enforcement agencies’ investigations of complaints of misconduct by law enforcement.” As of July 1, those panels were effectively made illegal.

In signing the bill, DeSantis said the 21 or so panels then in existence “just start reviewing things and trying to put people under the gun, even if there’s no basis to do that…We don’t think that that will contribute to public safety at all. In fact, we think that that would hurt public safety, and so this bill really stops that from happening.

Not true, say those involved in Miami’s CIP.

“I think the culminating effect of the CIP, if you look back on the work that we did, it said that we gave the community a mouthpiece to be involved in a process that allowed them to trust the police department more than they did before,” said its executive director, Rodney Jacobs.

“It’s not us against them,” said Michelle Reboso, the CIP’s chair. Told the governor said the panels make police “miserable,” hurt public safety and create “false narratives,” Reboso said, “That’s incorrect. And I think it’s … almost ignorant to say because I think it’s not properly researched.”

But yesterday city manager Art Noriega told the CIP its $1.3 million budget and seven employees will be eliminated at the end of next month, as mandated by the new law.

The City said the current chief will eventually appoint at least three civilians to review policies and procedures, as allowed by the law, but they cannot review misconduct allegations or discipline.

The CIP’s leaders point to several reforms it helped push to make police more accountable.

Their investigations pressured the city to keep better tabs on officers working off duty, some of whom were seen falling asleep on the job or being entertained by an exotic dancer working in the entertainment district where they were hired to patrol.

The CIP’s analysis of the use of body-worn cameras also showed how often officers failed to turn them on, or unmute their microphones, in violation of policy.

The resulting emphasis on proper use of the cameras has led to greater use, which in turn, the CIP says, allows investigators to exonerate officers much more often than sustain violations against them.

In total, Jacobs said of the CIP, “I think because of all of that, it has created a more resilient and sustainable city.”

Similar panels in Fort Lauderdale and North Miami are also gone. The Director of Miami-Dade County Independent Civilian Panel told NBC6 that because of the law, it will “no longer receive or process complaints of misconduct by law enforcement.”

TikTok influencer Eixchelb shot at and nearly killed by ex-stepdad: Police https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/tiktok-influencer-eixchelb-shot-at-and-nearly-killed-by-ex-stepdad-police/3402030/ 3402030 post 9836204 Instagram, Miami-Dade Corrections https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/08/082724-Eixchel-Berroteran-Luis-Damas.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A South Florida social media influencer with a large following was shot at and nearly killed by her former stepfather who’s facing attempted murder and other charges in the incident, police said.

Eixchel Berroteran, known as Eixchelb to her 4.3 million TikTok and 650,000 Instagram followers, documented the incident in a social media post.

“Only God knows why I’m still here and I ask him to give me the strength to move on and that at some point he can heal my heart,” she wrote in Spanish on Instagram in a post that included photos and videos of her bloodied hand and the other injuries she suffered.

Berroteran, who is originally from Venezuela, isn’t named in the police arrest report nor is her mother, who was also a victim in the incident.

According to the arrest report, the incident involved 64-year-old Luis Damas, who was married to Berroteran’s mother for 13 years but has been separated from for seven months.

Luis Damas

On Aug. 21, Damas showed up at the Miami apartment where the ex-wife and Berroteran were and knocked on the door, the report said.

The ex-wife had a friend over and told Damas she’d contact him later, but a couple hours later as the friend was leaving Damas was in the hallway outside the apartment.

Damas and his ex-wife started to argue, and Damas started yelling and asking where Berroteran was located, saying “she was the reason they could not be together,” the report said.

The ex-wife said Damas pushed her into the apartment and pulled out a gun, saying he was going to kill Berroteran, the report said.

Damas made his way to a bedroom where Berroteran was and pointed the gun at her, and she jumped off the bed and tried to hide under a mattress as Damas said “I’m going to kill you” and fired one shot, missing Berroteran, the report said.

The ex-wife said she started to wrestle with Damas as Berroteran jumped on him.

“I threw myself on the floor asking him to please not do anything, with the intention of getting under the bed, but I was very short and I decided to crawl towards him screaming for him to stop and at that moment I heard the shot that left me stunned; but my mom, who was already behind him, wrestled him so the shot didn’t hit me,” Berroteran wrote on Instagram.

Damas started to bite his ex-wife and she started hitting him with a wine bottle, the report said.

“He bit my mom and pulled my hair very hard, we both screamed for help but until that moment no one listened, he kept insisting on shooting me and between the two of us we grabbed his hand where he held the gun and he always wanted to point it at me,” Berroteran wrote.

The ex-wife pleaded with Damas to calm down and he started to but kept a hold of Berroteran by her hair and placed the gun under his thigh while sitting on a couch, the report said.

Damas agreed to sit and talk about the incident then demanded the ex-wife help him clean up the scene in the apartment, and he had her sweep and mop the floor and collect evidence from the scene and put it in a garbage bag, the report said.

Damas left the apartment as the ex-wife “advised him she would walk him out in an attempt to make him feel reassured that she was not going to contact the authorities,” the report said.

The ex-wife later told investigators that they didn’t contact police right away because Damas “threatened them that if police was contacted, he would have them killed by hitmen that he knew,” the report said.

Berroteran’s mother said they went to the hospital and contacted police the next day.

“There are no words to describe the terror, pain, trauma, anxiety and panic attacks this has caused us,” Berroteran wrote on Instagram.

Damas was later arrested on charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, burglary with assault or battery, attempted tampering with physical evidence, false imprisonment, and felony battery.

He appeared in court on Saturday where he was ordered held without bond.

“Today I can tell you that trauma hurts more than physical injuries, and that I really don’t know how I will ever overcome this nightmare,” Berroteran wrote. “I ask that you pray a lot for us and that justice is served. On my part I promise you that when I manage to heal even just a little…I will become the voice of all the people who have been victims of abuse, abuse and in this case..almost murdered.”

At one point, the man appeared to brandish a sharp object and hold the dog down.

Miami Police responded to the scene on Tuesday along with Animal Services investigators, who are conducting an investigation, according to a Miami PD spokesperson.

Police also confirmed that the dog was evaluated.

“The dog has been checked out and cleared of any injuries or damages post an evaluation,” Miami Police stated.

Miami-Dade Animal Services later confirmed the owner’s two dogs were brought in for physical examinations, where veterinarians noted no injuries and both appeared to be in good physical health and did not have a negative rapport with the owner. Investigators also noted the animals had adequate housing, food and water.

“The owner explained that he was following training procedures that were provided to him by the dog’s trainer.  The owner was cautioned about leaving dogs on the balcony unattended and was advised that the correction method used on the dogs was not recommended,” Animal Services said in a statement.

Miami-Dade Animal Services also emphasized that anyone who witnesses animal abuse should report it as soon as possible.

“It is critical that if you see animal cruelty happening, you call 911 immediately,” the spokesperson added. “If you can safely get evidence such as a video, do so and be ready to provide it to Police (911) and/or Animal Services (311).”

Fake Miami rideshare driver who allegedly assaulted women passengers back in jail https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/fake-miami-rideshare-driver-who-allegedly-assaulted-women-passengers-back-in-jail/3401728/ 3401728 post 9822421 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/08/GettyImages-1662831200.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A man who posed as an Uber driver and pleaded guilty to sexually battering and robbing two women last year is back in jail again after being released on probation.

Now, Yadir Gongora is accused of raping two other women on two separate occasions who also thought they were getting into a rideshare.

Police arrested the 39-year-old Friday after they said DNA evidence linked him to the crimes last year. The first woman was 22 years old. According to an arrest form, she went out with some friends in Brickell in August of last year for drinks. When it was time to leave, her cellphone battery was dying and she lost her friends.

Booking photo of Yadir Gongora

She didn’t remember getting into a vehicle to go home, but the arrest report said she did recall waking up and seeing a man on top of her sexually assaulting her. She tried to push him off but couldn’t.

There was allegedly another man in the front seat driving. The arrest form said he told her to get out and left her outside a grocery store four and a half hours after the woman lost her memory. According to detectives, a rape kit matched Gongora’s DNA.

And in September of last year, the other woman he’s accused of raping was 21 years old. After a night drinking with her friends, the woman didn’t remember getting into a vehicle to go home. But when she woke up, she had already been dropped off near Hialeah and the 826.

She told investigators she had her underwear in her purse, and her phone, wallet, and camera were missing. A rape kit was performed and Gongora’s DNA was allegedly also a match.

Gongora was previously arrested last year in October after police said he posed as an Uber driver before sexually battering and robbing two other women. Gongora pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced to probation.

When he was arrested on the new charges last week, Gongora told police, “he would offer people rides that would exit clubs in the Wynwood, downtown area … he would work on his own and not via an official rideshare application – and – admitted to picking up intoxicated patrons leaving the clubs.”

There is a hold on bond so Gongora won’t be released anytime soon. He’s charged with sexual battery, kidnapping, and robbery.

According to arrest reports, the four suspects had been passengers on the MSC Magnifica, which left Miami on Aug. 19 on a trip with stops in the Bahamas.

During the trip, MSC security said the suspects had been attempting to “cash large amounts of money on board” by using fraudulent credit cards in the ship’s casino to pay slot machines and other casino games, the reports said.

Security contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which found fraudulent activity related to the suspects’ booking of the cruise and financial transactions while on board the ship, the reports said.

Bahamian Customs and Border Protection were contacted and told to not allow the suspects to leave the ship and enter the Bahamas.

When the ship returned to PortMiami on Friday, the four suspects were taken into custody and booked into jail in Miami-Dade.

The reports said investigators found the suspects had registered three different credit cards during the cruise that were declined because they were fraudulent.

U.S. Customs searched the suspects’ phones and found “numerous amounts of personal identifiable information” on the phones, the reports said.

L to R: Michael F Emmanuel, Tyrisha Delgado, Devin Jones and Quentin Marcellus Tuck

The suspects were identified as 35-year-old Michael F. Emmanuel and 38-year-old Tyrisha Delgado, both from the Boston area, and 28-year-old Devin Jones and 32-year-old Quentin Marcellus Tuck, both from the Beaumont, Texas area.

All four are charged with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and fraudulent use of a credit card. Emmanuel, Delgado and Jones are also charged with fraudulent use of identification.

Little Havana neighborhood on edge after man seen peering into windows while touching himself https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/little-havana-neighborhood-peeping-tom-caught-on-camera/3400225/ 3400225 post 9830619 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/08/little-havana-miami-peeping-tom-08232024.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A Little Havana neighborhood is on edge after a man was caught on video touching himself while looking into windows.

It happened around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday when many families who live on Southwest 10th Street near Southwest 7th Avenue are getting ready for work and school.

Jose Larreynaga said his neighbor called him to alert him that someone may be stealing his tools, but he was already at work, so he decided to look on his doorbell camera app.

“When I looked at the camara, to my surprise, I see a man touching himself in front of my daughter’s window,” he said in Spanish.

A surveillance camera captured the man walking in and looking around before starting to peer into windows and touch his private parts.

The man appears to have a tattoo on his right forearm. Another camera angle shows he’s wearing a black t-shirt with a large orange Adidas logo on the back. He’s then seen grabbing a plastic chair and taking it to the back of the building.

As the man leaves, he appears to wipe his hands on his shorts, casually waves at a neighbor and then takes off in a black Honda Civic.

NBC6 spoke to a woman who didn’t want to be identified but she said she knew something was off the minute she saw the man walk by her because she’d never seen him in the neighborhood before.

Larreynaga said that with so many kids in the neighborhood, he’s worried about what the man might do if he returns.

“Everyone’s terrified and afraid for the kids because this man is in a car,” Larreynaga said.

If you recognize the man in the video call the Miami Police Department at (305) 579-6111.
