“He was a very personable person, very outgoing,” Christina said.

On Saturday, Demoy was shot and killed in what police say was a shooting caused by road rage.

“Just because you’re upset, just because you didn’t like what someone did on the road doesn’t give you the right to take their life,” she said.

Investigators say around 5 p.m., officers got called to a shooting on NW 175th Street and NW 22nd Avenue in Miami Gardens.

Police say when officers got there, they found Demoy shot near his car. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Surveillance video shows the two cars turning onto NW 175th Street and driving closely together. Demoy was in a silver car.

Police say the suspect stayed on scene and was brought in for questioning and charges are pending.

The family has created a GoFundMe page.

Miami-Dade firefighter hospitalized after battling storage facility blaze https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/miami-dade-firefighter-hospitalized-after-battling-storage-facility-blaze/3423453/ 3423453 post 9901498 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/0921234-miami-dade-firefighter-injured-miami-gardens-storage-fire.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A Miami-Dade firefighter was hospitalized with minor injuries suffered while battling a blaze at a public storage facility in Miami Gardens on Saturday.

The fire happened at the facility in the 17500 block of Northwest 2nd Avenue.

Footage showed smoke pouring out of the building as firefighters made their way inside.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said crews responded around 10 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the building.

Inside, they found multiple storage units on fire. Officials said the large amount of units inside the two-story building made it difficult and dangerous to fight.

“[It] presented a lot of challenges to actually get to the fire, because it actually had two levels inside and anytime you have a public storage facility there’s a lot of different various content in there that can catch fire and create a dangerous, non-visible smoke conditions as well,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Michael Eng said.

Over 35 fire units responded to the scene as ladder trucks were deployed to access the roof and cut openings for ventilation.

The fire was brought under control, and crews were monitoring for hot spots.

Eng said it was hard to tell how many storage units were impacted but he said at least three were “fully engulfed.”

One firefighter who suffered minor injuries was taken to a local hospital.

Before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue showed up, Perry Hilton says he was at the storage facility trying to grab a few things out of his unit when he first noticed the smoke.

“When I opened the door I saw smoke coming from the back end of the storage unit,” Hilton said. “I grabbed the fire extinguisher from her and I tried to put out the flames.”

Hilton said the fire was too much.

“The fire and smoke was coming so fast. I told everybody let’s get out,” Hilton said.

Hilton said he later learned from a fire official that his unit was destroyed. He said he and his fiancé had many of their personal belongings inside.

“Everything that I had inside there was lost,” Hilton said.

Hilton admitted that he’s upset, but in that moment, he realized what was more important.

“I could have tried to get my stuff out and not worry about the fire but I chose to make sure everyone in the building got out,” Hilton said. “Had I not gone there this morning, the person working would have not known there was a fire in there.”

An employee told NBC6 they would be closed possibly until Monday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

6 South Florida men busted in Lamborghini carjacking and kidnapping in Connecticut https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/6-south-florida-men-busted-in-lamborghini-carjacking-and-kidnapping-in-connecticut/3415982/ 3415982 post 9879023 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/GettyImages-1664509334.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A group of six South Florida men are facing federal charges in connection with the violent armed carjacking and kidnapping of a couple in a Lamborghini in Connecticut.

Angel Borrero, Josue Alberto Romero, Michael Rivas and Ricardo Estrada, all from Miami, Anthony Pena from Miami Gardens, and Reynaldo Diaz of Belle Glade, are facing carjacking and conspiracy charges, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut said Thursday.

The crime happened back on Aug. 25 in Danbury, when police responded to multiple 911 calls from people who witnessed the carjacking.

Prosecutors said the man and woman were in a Lamborghini Urus that was rear-ended by a Honda Civic before a white work van cut in front of them.

The victims were forcibly removed from their vehicle, dragged into the van, and bound with duct tape, while they were repeatedly told they would be killed.

When the male victim began to resist, he was punched in the face and hit with a baseball bat, authorities said.

Officers who responded to the 911 calls spotted the van and tried to stop it, but it sped away, officials said.

The van eventually crashed, and officers found the two victims inside, both bound with duct tape. The man had significant injuries to his face and arm, and both victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Borrero, Romero, Pena, and Diaz were captured in the area near where the van crashed. Rivas and Estrada, and the Honda Civic that rear-ended the Lamborghini, were located at a short-term rental home nearby, authorities said.

The Lamborghini was found abandoned in a wooded area.

It is alleged that the 23-year-old Borrero, known as “Chi Chi,” organized, paid for, and booked flights for the six suspects to travel from Florida to commit the crime, authorities said.

The conspiracy charges carry a maximum of five years in prison, while the carjacking charges carry a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years.

An investigation involving the FBI New Haven Violent Crimes Task Force and the Danbury Police Department is ongoing.

‘I want to be safe': Neighbors take measures after violent shooting in Miami Gardens https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/neighbors-take-measures-after-violent-shooting-in-miami-gardens/3412984/ 3412984 post 9869849 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/09/Surveillance-camera-captures-gunfire-in-Miami-Gardens-shooting.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 After a shooting left five people injured in Miami Gardens over the weekend, residents are taking dramatic steps to protect their loved ones.

The shooting happened Saturday, just before 10:30 p.m. outside the Omega Activity Center near Florida Memorial University. Police say a private event was being held at the event hall.

Surveillance video from Servando Garcia’s home across the street shows a large crowd outside the building before at least 10 seconds of rapid gunfire can be heard.

Some of those bullets went into his house.

“I did the reinforced walls when I finished the house but right now the windows need to be bulletproof because there’s a lot of shooting going on around here,” Garcia said. “The insurance company is asking me right now, ‘Who did that?’ I said, across the street.”

On Monday, ATF officers and K9s were seen roaming the property as they looked for evidence.

The Miami Gardens Police Department says four of the five adults shot have been released from the hospital. The fifth individual remains stable.

A person of interest detained on Saturday night was released, according to police. Detectives are pursuing “investigative leads” to find those responsible for pulling the trigger. As of Monday, a motive remains unclear.

“What I want to do is to get everyone together so Miami Gardens can get more police force,” Garcia said. “If you want to raise the taxes, that’s fine with me, but I want to be safe.”

Anyone with information should contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).

The chaos unfolded steps away from resident Servando Garcia’s home.

“I told my wife ‘get on the floor, somebody’s shooting at the house,'” Garcia said.

At least one bullet hit Garcia’s home as the gunfire continued.

“I look out the window and see something hit the wall and the spark on the wall of my house bounced back and looks like it hit my car,” he said. “I walk out of the house right away to see what’s going on when I see everybody running out, going crazy. I tried to call 911.”

Garcia’s surveillance cameras showed officers quickly arriving at the scene.

How HBCU drumlines drive tradition and culture at Orange Blossom Classic https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/how-hbcu-drumlines-drive-tradition-and-culture-at-orange-blossom-classic/3405056/ 3405056 post 9845548 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/08/GettyImages-1642781051.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,199 When you think of college football, the first thing that comes to mind might be touchdowns and packed stadiums. But at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the halftime show often steals the spotlight. The Marching Band performance—specifically, the drumline—takes center stage, embodying a culture that resonates far beyond the football field.

The Orange Blossom Classic returns to South Florida this weekend. For attendees, it’s clear that the celebration is much more than just entertainment. The heartbeat of every HBCU lies within the rhythmic pulse of the drumline. For these institutions, it’s not just about the music—it’s about a sense of belonging, history, and pride.

“You cannot omit the bands when you talk about HBCUs; they have always been a staple in our community. This tradition goes all the way back to our African heritage, our African roots,” said Kendra N. Bulluck-Major, the Executive Director of the Orange Blossom Classic.

The Orange Blossom Classic is gearing up for a weekend filled with events leading up to the much-anticipated clash between North Carolina Central and Alabama State at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. But before the teams hit the field, the spotlight will be on the Battle of the Bands—a thrilling showdown where the best marching bands compete for the prestigious Best of Show title.

“So, you know, with HBCU football and HBCU classics, the bands are just as exciting and just as big as what happens on the football field!” Bulluck-Major told NBC 6 News.

The energy and intensity of these performances are unmatched, with young musicians from across the country—and right here at home.

Xavier Joseph, Drum Major at North Miami Senior High School, describes the experience as “pretty nerve-wracking.”

“But once you get comfortable, the audience will interact with you,” explained Xavier.

Behind each flawless performance lies countless hours of preparation and dedication.

“Practice is very, very intense,” Xavier said. “Because we have to practice how we perform. If you practice bad habits, it shows on game day.”

Gabriel Guillaume is also a senior band member at North Miami Senior High School and he says being a member of the band has many benefits.

“Band offers scholarships. You can get a full ride scholarship from any HBCU, any PWI, any band college you want,” said Gabriel.

On Saturday, August 31, 2024, the Orange Blossom Classic kicks off with a 5K Run/Walk starting at 7 a.m. at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, located at 3000 NW 199th St, Miami Gardens, FL 33056.

Later that day, the OBC Battle of the Bands will feature the NCCU Sound Machine and The Mighty Marching Hornets at the Watsco Center at the University of Miami, 1245 Dauer Dr, Coral Gables, FL 33146.

Doors open at 5 p.m., and the event begins at 6 p.m. Don’t miss this celebration of rhythm, culture, and community!

Police arrived to the area of 183rd Street and 45th Avenue just after 9:30 p.m. after they said someone opened fire on the white Nissan, killing the driver and leaving the passenger in critical condition.

The three toddlers that were riding in the back were unharmed in the shooting and have since been reunited with family members.

“Thank God they did not sustain any injury and they are safe,” Miami Gardens Police spokesperson Diana Delgado said.

The man who was killed was later identified as 20-year-old Mah’ki Eugene Cutler. Police said one child was related to Cutler and the other two are related to the other man who was shot, whose condition was later upgraded to stable.

Mah’ki Eugene Carter

Antoya Thompson said her son took his 6-year-old brother to a birthday party and then to McDonald’s when the shooting happened.

“I call him for everything, he calls me for everything,” she said. “We really have a relationship. I’m in tune with my child. He’s a good person.”

Police said they are searching for a dark-colored SUV in connection with the shooting.

At this time, it is unclear whether police are searching for one shooter or more, but they said it is possible this shooting could be gang-related.

“At this time we believe this is a targeted incident,” Delgado said.

Thompson is asking for witnesses to come forward.

“If they really want to help, just tell the truth,” she said. “I never asked nobody for nothing, I know people know. It was not meant for Mah’ki. It was not meant for him.”

Anyone with information on this shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Vulnerable mother tricked into working for human trafficking operation: Prosecutors https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/alleged-human-trafficking-ringleader-tricked-vulnerable-mother-into-prostitution-prosecutors/3365400/ 3365400 post 9705641 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/07/3-arrested-for-leading-human-trafficking-operation-involving-brothels-money-laundering-Prosecutors.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Officials at a news conference Wednesday shared the moving story of a vulnerable mother forced into prostitution at neighborhood brothels, and how an undercover operation helped put the suspects behind bars.

Three people are accused in the international human trafficking operation that spanned from Colombia to Florida and other parts of the United States, prosecutors said at a news conference Wednesday.

The alleged ringleader, Elibeth Tovar, 41; Omar Jaimes, 43; and Yasid Paul Ortiz, 52, are all facing charges related to corruption, money laundering and prostitution under the RICO act. Tovar faces an additional charge of human trafficking.

According to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez, during an investigation performed two years ago, an undercover officer answered an online ad for a “date,” met two women at the agreed location and negotiated a price for sexual activity. After arrests were made, one of those women said she worked for Tovar.

From left to right: Omar Jaimes, 43, Elibeth Tovar, 41, and Yasid Paul Ortiz, 52

The woman said she met Tovar at a casino, where she was fooled by promises of a better life, Fernandez said. The victim was a Colombian who had overstayed her visa and had trouble finding work and providing for her 4-year-old son.

Tovar offered her employment at SS Elevator Design, the company belonging to Ortiz, Tovar’s husband. The victim was convinced to leave her home in New York City and move to Miami with her child.

“Once in Miami… Tovar put her to work in a warehouse brothel down south,” Fernandez said. At one point, she worked with around 12 different women. Then, less.

“Our victim was trapped,” Fernandez said. “Tovar allegedly claimed that the victim owed her money for her daily housing and food needs. The victim was scared, vulnerable, she was illegally in this country, she was afraid to escape Tovar, and so she had to work.”

She feared for her life, and later told detectives that a threatening letter was dropped off at her father’s store in Colombia. It said in part, “We know where you go to school, and work, and live. Remember, snitches die.”

“She was afraid. Her family was afraid,” Fernandez said.

Ensuing investigations led authorities to a warehouse, rented apartments and homes, most in Miami Gardens, used as brothels.

Reather Bradley lives on Northwest 177th Street in Miami Gardens, across the street from one of the six properties that were allegedly used as a brothel. For the past year, she’s seen people going in and out of the home constantly.

“In the morning, in the afternoon, at night, if I go to church,” she said. “Sometimes it’ll be 10:30 when I get home, I see cars come in and cars leave.”

According to information from court on Wednesday, Jaimes allegedly served as the security at the brothels and was seen by undercover agents driving Tovar to make deposits and transactions at Western Union. Ortiz’s elevator business was allegedly used to conceal the profits. All three suspects allegedly also drove the sex workers around between different brothels.

“No one, by the way, is employed legally, yet all of the defendants had multiple Zelle and cash deposits,” Fernandez said. “A gross total of over $500,000 passed through [five of Tovar’s 17 bank accounts]. Ninety percent of them were in cash and in Zelle transfer deposits, that are consistent with proceeds derived from prostitution.”

Today, Fernandez said, the investigation into “this horrible, modern-day slavery” isn’t over. But “our victim and her child are safe, in large part thanks to this incredible team.”

According to an arrest report, a detective was working a Homeland Security detail at the stadium when he was alerted by stadium security that multiple people were attempting to gain entry to the stadium with fake tickets.

The detective went to a gate where he found officers attempting to separate multiple groups of victims.

Octavious Lamar Dozier

The multiple victims told detectives they had tried to purchase tickets outside the stadium from Dozier and his associates, the report said.

One victim said he’d paid $180 for an electronic ticket only to find out that it was fake.

Other victims paid $100 or $130 for a ticket, while some bought pairs of tickets for $250 or $300, all of which were fake, the report said.

All of the victims identified Dozier as the person who sold them the fake tickets, and he was taken into custody, the report said.

Dozier denied being the person who defrauded the victims but told investigators he was with another man named “Dolla” who was interacting with the victims and fled on foot after defrauding them, the report said.

Dozier, who lives in College Park, Georgia, was arrested on charges of grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, and fraudulent creation or possession of an admission ticket.

‘Why?': Family wants answers after police kill man in Miami Gardens https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/family-wants-answers-after-police-kill-man-in-miami-gardens/3352663/ 3352663 post 9663539 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/07/daniel-lewis-miami-gardens-police-shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The Lewis family is still grieving, searching for closure, because they don’t understand why police shot and killed Daniel Lewis as he stood on his back porch on May 31.

“I watched my son take his last breath, and that’s the hardest thing a mother could ever do, from the first to the last,” said Angela Lewis, Daniel’s mother, at a news conference Tuesday. “Nobody will understand what was taken from us, and all we want to know is why, why, why did it have to happen?”

“The answer to her question, ‘Why did this have to happen?’ is it did not have to happen, it absolutely did not have to happen, Mr. Lewis should still be here today,” said Chris Lomax, an attorney representing the family in a forthcoming lawsuit against the Miami Gardens Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Those agencies were working together in a task force to combat gun violence.

Lewis was 27, the son of a retired New York City Police officer. He had two young kids, no criminal record, and a permit to carry a gun. On that night in May, he was at home. His cousins were in a car being followed, they say, by an unmarked black car that had no police lights or sirens. They panicked and drove into their backyard to get away from what they thought were gang members. Lewis came outside to see what was going on and that’s when he was shot.

“Not once did anyone yell police, stop, police, freeze, instead what they did was they gunned down a law-abiding citizen in his backyard, on his back doorstep, without a warning,” said attorney Ariel Lett.

On the night of the incident, the special agent in charge of the ATF office in Miami, Christopher Robinson, said, “Unfortunately, some individuals discharged firearms at some Miami Gardens detectives as well as some of my agents, gunfire was returned, one individual struck and he’s unfortunately deceased.”

“What was the rush, what was the urgency to fire upon Mr. Lewis on this night? There was none, this was a bad shoot, it shouldn’t have happened,” Lomax said.

NBC6 reached out to both agencies for comment Tuesday. Miami Gardens Police have not responded while ATF told us they can’t comment because they’re still investigating.

The Lewis family attorneys say he did have his gun on him when he died, but none of the shells found at the scene came from his gun. If he pointed the gun at police, that would be enough of a threat for officers to fire at him. We don’t know if that happened, or if Lewis had any idea that they were police.

21-year-old driver killed in violent Miami Gardens crash https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/crash-investigation-in-miami-gardens-closes-roads/3351895/ 3351895 post 9661747 Family of Mekhi Hoosein Quiles/NBC 6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/07/image-2024-07-02T103311.082.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A driver was killed in Miami Gardens on Tuesday after another car disobeyed a traffic signal and slammed into him, according to police.

The violent crash happened on 183rd Street and 22nd Avenue at around 4:10 a.m.

The driver who was killed, identified by family as 21-year-old Mekhi Hoosein Quiles, had been traveling southbound on NW 22nd Avenue in an orange Ford Taurus, Miami Gardens police said.

The driver of a grey Infinity was traveling west on NW 183rd Street and “disobeyed the traffic signal,” hitting Quiles.

Quiles died at the scene, according to authorities. The driver of the Infinity was taken to the hospital.

The Infinity also caused “damage to the bus stop on the north side of the street,” police said.

It was not immediately clear if the driver of the Infinity would be facing charges.

Quiles’ mother spoke to NBC 6, saying her son’s phone alerted her that he had been in a crash. The phone sent a location which brought her right to the scene.

Debris could be seen all over the roadway. The mangled Taurus was left with a crumpled left side, broken windows and its front bumper torn off. The Infinity sustained damage to its front hood and a broken front windshield.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Miami Gardens Drive (183rd Street) between 22nd and 24th avenues are closed due to the investigation.

Alternate routes include NW 175th Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

This is a developing story. Refresh for updates.

Married teachers retire after nearly 40 years at Miami Gardens high school https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/married-teachers-retire-miami-norland-senior-high-school/3330512/ 3330512 post 9597768 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/06/Daniel-and-Brenda-Muchnick.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all After decades of dedication and service, two beloved teachers from Miami Norland Senior High School are set to retire this week.

The husband-and-wife duo, Daniel and Brenda Muchnick, have shaped the lives of countless students, leaving a lasting legacy in their community.

Mr. Muchnick has spent the last 38 years teaching history.

“I’ve been very lucky. We’ve been here all these years, and the people we work with are so good. They’re family to us,” he said.

Mrs. Muchnick has dedicated 37 years to teaching business.

“When I started, we had 30 electric typewriters in rows in this huge room. Each year, we got a couple of new computers, and 28 typewriters,” she said. “Then 26 typewriters and four computers. The kids would rotate, saying, ‘It’s my turn to use a computer today, Mrs. Muchnick!'”

Education has been a way of life for the Muchnicks, something that connected them early in their careers.

“We always felt supported by our administrators and our fellow teachers. We made a big difference in a lot of students’ lives,” Mrs. Muchnick said.

They met at the high school, and their love story began at a faculty meeting. Now, as they prepare to leave, the Muchnicks are reflecting on what they will miss most.

“The students, just encouraging them and being excited for their success,” Mrs. Muchnick said.

The couple has inspired the next generation, with many of their former students becoming teachers at the high school.

“I’ve never had a bad day at work in 38 years,” Mr. Muchnick said. “Once I’m here, every day is a good day. Once I close my door and get to teach my class, every day is a good day.”

The Muchnicks are not just teachers, but mentors and inspirations to generations of students.

“People like them made me want to get back into education and give back to the students in our community,” Carla Harris, assistant dean of discipline, said.

So what’s next for the couple?

Mr. and Mrs. Muchnik plan to do lots of traveling, with their first big trip planned for the fall. Instead of going back to school with the kids, they’ll be flying across the ocean to see Europe.

Police say when officers got there, they found Demoy shot near his car. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Keon Bernard Smith, the quarterbacks coach at Miami Norland Senior High School in Miami Gardens, was killed early Monday in the area of Northwest 132nd Street and Northwest 28th Avenue.

Miami-Dade Police said the incident happened shortly before 1 a.m. when Opa-locka Police officers responding to reports of a shooting found the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded and pronounced him dead the scene.

Thomas Black, Smith’s uncle, told NBC6 on Tuesday that he couldn’t believe his nephew was gone.

“He’s going to be missed. He’s real missed,” Black said. “Real humble guy, very humble. I can ask him to do anything and he never gave me a word back, he was always helpful in everything.”

Smith, 49, was remembered by his uncle as have a true passion for football.

“All the young guys looked up to him, I mean every time, he’d been coaching for a long time and some of the guys he coached made it to the pros,” Black said.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials said crisis counselors were at the school on Monday. At graduation on Tuesday, a moment of silence was held to honor him.

The school posted a message about Smith on Instagram early Tuesday.

“On behalf of Principal Gaines-Miller, Coach Heidelburg, the Miami Norland Senior High School family, and the entire football team, we’d like to offer the family of Coach Keon Smith our deepest condolences. It was truly an honor to work alongside him as a coach, mentor, and leader,” the message said. “You will be truly missed in Viking Nation.”

Police are investigating but said they had no suspect information.

Smith’s uncle thinks police know who they are looking for, but they’re hoping he comes forward.

“Turn yourself in buddy, turn yourself in, because you took a life and you took a life of somebody well liked. And I really don’t know what happened but it’s not worth it. Turn yourself in,” Black said.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

‘I'm not crazy, I'm sober': Video shows Miami Gardens Police sergeant's DUI arrest https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/im-not-crazy-im-sober-video-shows-miami-gardens-police-sergeants-dui-arrest/3327085/ 3327085 post 9588357 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/06/060324-miami-gardens-police-sergeant-andrea-smith-arrest-bodycam-video.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all New video shows the arrest of a Miami Gardens Police sergeant on DUI and reckless driving charges earlier this year.

The body camera video obtained exclusively by NBC6 shows Sgt. Andrea Smith, in heels and a dress, getting arrested by her own department.

“Are you serious sergeant, really?” a Miami Gardens officer asks Smith in the video when he noticed the woman pulled over was his coworker.

Smith, who has been with the Miami Gardens Police department for nearly 10 years, was spotted speeding in her white Mercedes back on March 14.

According to a report, the Mercedes rolled through a red light then sped through another.

After the officer stopped the car and approached with their gun drawn, they found the driver, Smith, who had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol on her breath, the report said.

Records show Smith allegedly denied sobriety tests. However, video shows Smith agreed to participate in the tests initially, but the Miami Gardens officer abruptly stopped conducting them.

“They advised me that Miramar is coming to take over. They told me to stop. My sergeant told me to stop,” an officer is heard telling Smith.

The arrest document goes on to say a Miramar officer also noticed the smell of alcohol and that’s when Smith denied a breath test.

“The arrest of Sergeant Andrea Smith is nothing short of a travesty of justice. Not only do the videos show that she didn’t have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, an unsteady gait and/or an inability to engage in intelligent communication, Sergeant Smith agreed to perform all sobriety exercises,” said Mark Lefcourt, an attorney representing Smith. “The Miami Gardens police department specifically offered them to her, she agreed but then the M.G.P.D. Officer refused to give them to her.”

Smith was booked into jail on two traffic citations.

On her way to jail, Smith stated her department was treating her “like an animal” and told the officer driving her, “if they can take a sergeant to jail, they can take you to jail.”

At times, Smith fell asleep inside the cop vehicle. But, when awake, she offered the officer driving her financial advice and boasted her success, “make your money and get the *** out.”

“I’m not crazy. I’m sober,” Smith said in the back of the police car at one point.

Smith has pleaded not guilty and her attorney claims more will come out during trial.

“This appears to be nothing more than retribution for being a whistleblower,” said Lefcourt.

Smith was relieved of duty by the Miami Gardens Police Department.

Rashad Bernard White, 34, was arrested Thursday on a second-degree murder charge in the July 11, 2023 shooting of 18-year-old Jacob Alexander Zamora, authorities said.

Zamora had been found shot in the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 167th Street, not far from the Palmetto Expressway.

He was airlifted to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Investigators found Zamora’s skateboard, phone and personal belongings, along with a spent 9mm casing, at the scene.

Surveillance video from a local business showed the victim skateboarding on Northwest 167th Street and either grabbing or tapping the suspect’s car as he passed by, an arrest report said.

At one point Zamora crossed in front of the suspect’s car and the suspect swerved toward the victim, the report said.

Another video found by detectives showed Zamora holding his skateboard and backing away from the suspect, who was armed and pointing his gun at the victim, the report said.

Zamora was holding his skateboard in front of him as a shield when the suspect fired at the victim, hitting him in the torso, the report said.

The suspect then got back in his car and left.

Photos released by police showed the suspect holding a gun with what appears to be an extended magazine and aiming it.

Another driver who witnessed the incident gave police the suspect’s license plate number, and police tracked down the car, which was registered to White, the report said.

Officers stopped the car, which was being driven by a friend of White, and found a Glock 9mm with an extended magazine on the floorboard, the report said.

The Crime Stoppers flyer for Jacob Zamora

White and his attorney met with investigators the day after the shooting, where White provided his cellphone number, the report said.

White’s shoes, which matched ones seen in one of the videos from the crime, were confiscated, the report said.

The report said cell site data showed White’s phone was near the scene and left the area around the time of the shooting, the report said.

And the person who’d been driving White’s car identified him in the video of the incident and recognized the shooter’s shoes as White’s, the report said.

White was taken into custody on Thursday but refused to speak with detectives before he was booked into jail, the report said.

Video shows group firing high-powered weapons in Miami Gardens neighborhood https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/video-catches-group-firing-high-powered-weapons-in-miami-gardens-neighborhood/3312022/ 3312022 post 9541786 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/05/05152024-miami-gardens-high-powered-weapons-shootout.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all High-powered gunfire rattled a Miami Gardens neighborhood in the middle of the night on Wednesday, and a barrage of bullets pierced through several cars, homes, and windows while neighbors were inside sleeping.

The ambush with ammunition happened just after midnight in the 4200 block of 196th Street. Witnesses described at least five people with high-powered weapons waiting for a silver Nissan. As the Nissan approached, video showed the automatic gunfire start and continue for 18 seconds.

Louis Rivera was on the couch watching television when the shots rang out. He said he could hear at least 50 rounds.

“Look, at my age, man, I’m 68. I’ve been through hell and back, so this doesn’t scare me,” he said. “What scares me is that they could go inside my house and they can hurt some of my family.”

Rivera’s wife and 6-year-old daughter hid in a room, ducking for cover. His little girl had just returned from cancer treatment at the hospital.

“When we came in, she was in pain she was crying. She’s a tough cookie, but I mean this right here, she was scared,” Rivera said. “She was crying she didn’t know what was happening, but we were there for her.”

The shot-up Nissan crashed into Rivera’s fence before the people inside the car got out and ran. Rivera thought some of them went into his backyard and said he armed himself immediately while calling 911.

“I got a gun right on top of a high cabinet there, I got it because I saw that guy had jumped to the back,” Rivera said.

Police eventually showed up only to find the neighborhood block looking like a war zone with bullet holes in homes, windows, concrete and cars.

A neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said he’s lived in the area since 2017 and has never seen anything like this so close to home.

“There was like 50, 60 bullets on the floor. The truck got hit like 12 (times),” he said. “We got to continue living life. It’s normal. It’s everywhere. It’s Miami Beach, Brickell, it’s gonna happen everywhere, to be honest.”

Police didn’t disclose much about their investigation, but neighbors said the people in the silver car eventually came back — and police let them go, saying they were victims.

The discovery was made around 8:15 a.m. in the area of the 3900 block of Northwest 207th Drive in the Carol City neighborhood.

Miami Gardens Police officials said the man was found with multiple gunshot wounds, and had his hands tied behind his back and his face covered with a plastic bag.

“His ankles were in the water. The rest of his body was outside,” said one neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified. “Very strange the way he was like laying down in the water.”

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the body on the bank of the canal covered by a yellow tarp, with multiple officers at the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity hasn’t been released.

Investigators were seen collecting evidence, and the medical examiner’s office later retrieved the man’s body.

Police said the motive for the shooting was unknown and there was no suspect information.

Brenda Gabriel, who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly five decades, said she was shocked to learn of what happened.

“I’ve been here for 46 years, nothing like this has ever happened before but of course, we are cautious,” she said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Police search for suspect after man stabbed at 24 Hour Fitness in Miami Gardens https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/police-search-for-suspect-after-man-stabbed-at-24-hour-fitness-in-miami-gardens/3307322/ 3307322 post 9526946 NBC6 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/05/miami-gardens-24-hour-fitness-stabbing-05092024.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A suspect is at large after he stabbed a man during an argument Thursday at a 24 Hour Fitness in Miami Gardens, police said.

The incident happened before 7 p.m. at the gym along Northwest 27th Avenue.

Police said the two men were arguing when one of them pulled out a knife and stabbed the other.

The victim was able to make it outside, where off-duty officers helped. He was airlifted to Aventura Hospital in critical but stable condition, police said.

Police are still searching for the attacker, who they said fled from the rear of the business and into an apartment complex next door.

24 Hour Fitness confirmed in a statement that the stabbing happened at one of their locations.

“Our thoughts are with the victim, and we hope for a speedy recovery,” the statement said in part, adding that they couldn’t comment on an active police investigation.

Luis Portalatin and his family live in the apartment complex and were on the balcony when they saw people running, then police.

“We don’t know if that person lives here or not but they shut down one of the buildings,” Portalatin said. “Me thinking that someone that may have caused this lives here is very disturbing for me to know.”

People showed up to the gym Thursday night only to turn around. Betty Belair said she planned to get to the gym an hour earlier, but was glad that she didn’t.

“The Holy Spirit said that’s the connection, that’s why I stalled you, I didn’t want you involved, I kept you out of harm’s way,” Belair said.

2 Miami-Dade men arrested in connection with large cigarette heist in Virginia https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/2-miami-dade-men-arrested-in-connection-with-large-cigarette-heist-in-virginia/3305005/ 3305005 post 9519474 Culpeper Police https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/05/050724-Culpeper-Virginia-cigarette-heist-flyer.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A pair of Miami-Dade men have been arrested in connection with the heist of a large shipment of cigarettes in Virginia last month.

Ramon Izquierdo, 57, of Hialeah, and Alberto Rico Perez, 31, of Miami Gardens, have been arrested in the March 24 crime at a business in Culpeper, Virginia, police said Monday.

Both men were taken into custody in Miami-Dade and will be extradited to Virginia to face charges of felony burglary, felony conspiracy to commit burglary, and two counts of felony grand larceny.

Ramon Izquierdo, Alberto Rico Perez

Culpeper Police said at least five suspects were behind the heist at the Merchants Grocery Company.

The suspects forced their way inside and stole a large quantity of tobacco products, loading them into a box truck rented by the business and fleeing the scene.

Police said they worked with the ATF and numerous law enforcement agencies in New Jersey, New York, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida in the investigation, which led them to the stolen box truck and the arrests of Izquierdo and Perez.

Doral Police and Miami-Dade Fugitive Task Force took both men into custody last week.

“The actions these criminals took in our Town had a significant impact on the local business community,” Culpeper Police Chief Chris Settle said in a statement. “Utilizing emerging technology and dogged investigative determination, our detectives and analyst worked tirelessly with law enforcement agencies and federal partners along the entire East Coast. Technology has become an integral part of modern policing, but it’s the men and women behind the technology that truly make it effective. Thank you to our partner agencies for their on-going assistance and cooperation.”

Police said they’re still investigating persons of interest and said more charges could be filed.

Videos show shooter chasing and gunning down woman outside Miami Gardens library https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/videos-show-shooter-chasing-and-gunning-down-woman-outside-miami-gardens-library/3303920/ 3303920 post 9516090 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/05/miami-gardens-library-shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Surveillance video obtained by NBC6 shows the moments police say a woman chases and shoots another in the head outside a Miami Gardens library in broad daylight.

In October, police said officers responded to North Dade Regional Library in the 2400 block of Northwest 183rd Street after receiving reports of a woman shot.

The library surveillance video, which normally captures the parking lot, shows two women running around a red SUV.

The victim, wearing green, is seen crouching and circling a vehicle while trying to get away from Joyce Small.

However, Small continues to follow her and eventually catches up to her. Police said Small shot the woman, who has not been identified, in the head.

After the shooting, the video shows Small calmly walking away. Minutes after, bystanders noticed the body and a crowd started to form. Police eventually arrived at the scene.

After Small was in custody, she told officers she’d thrown the gun in a corner, which is where the weapon was found, the report said.

Small also told officers she knew the victim from the area as being homeless and would help the victim from time to time, allowing her into her home to sleep, shower and eat, the report said.

Small said she started to believe the victim was involved with her boyfriend. She said she started spying on her boyfriend and found him with his wife but not the victim, the report said.

Small also stated that for months, the victim began to mistreat her and “beat her up,” the report said.

When Small saw the victim at the library, she “believed the victim was purposely agitating her,” the report said.

Small’s private attorney has not responded to our request for comment. The defendant, charged with first-degree murder, is being held without bond.

Businesses expect big boost during Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix weekend https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/businesses-expect-big-boost-during-formula-1-miami-grand-prix-weekend/3301756/ 3301756 post 9509599 Getty Images https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/05/GettyImages-2151164744.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Hundreds of thousands of people are heading to South Florida this weekend for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, and local leaders and business owners have been preparing for a while.

Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens is once again hosting the Miami Grand Prix and that means an economic boost for South Florida.

The local economy benefited by $449 million from 2023’s race, which was an increase of 29% from 2022. Visitor spending in the Greater Miami region during race week reached over $195 million and total attendance was up nearly 15% in 2023.

Miami Gardens Mayor Rodney Harris said thanks to funding they received from Formula 1, they were able to renovate homes, give scholarships and help small businesses with grants.

“When you come into our community you have to be able to give something back, and Formula 1 has done just that,” Harris said.

Formula 1 is a big boost for businesses across South Florida and especially in Miami Gardens.

Ruthie Bodie is one of the owners of Lorna’s Caribbean & American Grill, which is right across the street from Hard Rock Stadium. She said business was booming the last two years and she expects the same this weekend.

“We are expecting a crowd,” Bodie said. “When you hear those cars revved up, the energy that’s over there, the helicopters that’s flying in, all the VIPs, it’s super exciting.”

Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying is Friday, followed by the 100-kilometre Sprint and Qualifying for the Grand Prix on Saturday, and then the Grand Prix on Sunday.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of Northwest 197th Street.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed a large police presence at the scene, along with fire rescue crews.

Miami Gardens Police officials said the incident began with an altercation involving students at nearby Miami Norland Senior High School.

Later on, a parent went to the home of one of the teens to speak to their parent, which was when the adults got into an argument — then someone pulled out a gun and opened fire, injuring multiple people, police said.

Three adults and two teens were injured in the gunfire. They were all taken to nearby hospitals in stable condition.

It’s unclear who opened fire and if there was more than one shooter.

“This is still being investigated. It’s not a shootout, however there were some shots that were fired but we’re still trying to investigate that,” Miami Gardens Police spokesperson Diana Delgado said.

An adult who is a person of interest was detained and police are trying to determine that person’s involvement, Delgado said.

No other information was immediately available.

The shooting happened after 2:30 p.m. in a neighborhood on Northwest 38th Place and 164th Street.

Miami Gardens Police said the teen, a 15-year-old boy, was on a scooter and walking with four other people when someone pulled out a gun and shot him in the back.

What led up to the shooting was unclear.

“It’s in the early stages of the investigation, and at this time we know that he was walking with four males who are believed to be the suspects and one of them shot the juvenile in the back,” said Miami Gardens spokesperson Diana Delgado.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said paramedics responded to the scene after reports of a possible shooting and that a juvenile victim was transported by air to the main trauma center.

The teen was alert when he was taken to the hospital, but there was no word on his condition. His identity wasn’t released.

A resident, who didn’t want to be shown on camera, said she heard three gunshots and somebody begging for help.

She called 911 and helped apply pressure to the teen’s wound while they waited for police and paramedics, she said.

“He was conscious. He was talking because he was also on the phone with 911. But he was on his stomach and telling 911 to hurry up,” the woman said.

Currently, no one is in custody. Police said they are looking for four males but did not have any additional details.

Further information was not available.

Video shows woman in wheelchair fighting off attacker inside Miami Gardens home https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/video-woman-wheelchair-fights-off-attacker-miami-gardens-home/3274909/ 3274909 post 9425460 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/04/04022024-miami-gardens-home-invasion.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Home surveillance cameras captured the terrifying moments a Miami Gardens woman in a wheelchair tried fighting off her neighbor who stormed inside her home and attacked her.

Nazvie Briones, 43, was lying in her bed in her apartment when suddenly the man broke in on Saturday.

“The terror that happened in this home forever changed my home, my life, my everything,” Briones told NBC6 in an exclusive interview Tuesday.

Ring camera video captured some of the home invasion. In one clip, Briones is heard yelling from her room to the suspect.

“Get the f— out of my house, you f—— psychopath,” she yells.

“He came in my home, started tearing everything apart, breaking and ripping and throwing glass,” Briones recalled. “You can see he shattered it all. He threw the dog gate into the wall. He destroyed my kitchen and grabbed the knife from my butcher block.”

That’s when Briones said she was scared for her life. She was already on the phone with 911.

“It was the power of God. Made him come back, drop the knife, then lunge into my room,” she said. “He grabbed the phone from my hand, tossed it in the window, shattered it, then came in and started attacking me.”

Briones then grabbed a ring light to defend herself.

“And with that same ring light, he started beating me with it over my head. He punched me in my face,” she said.

Eventually, Briones, who is disabled and on dialysis, was able to fend her neighbor off by pushing him out the front door with her wheelchair.

When Miami Gardens Police arrived, the suspect — 41-year-old Mohammed Haji — allegedly charged toward officers and kicked them, resisting arrest.

Haji has been in trouble before for something similar. In 2019, he was arrested for allegedly slashing a Walmart employee with scissors. After he was arrested, he then allegedly threatened then-President Donald Trump. The case was pleaded out.

“Why did somebody only get 219 days, who has a deportation thing? Why is he in this country to do it to somebody else — and then a handicapped person, on top of that,” Briones said.

Nazvie Briones said her service dog, Jonah, ran out during the home invasion, adding more heartbreak to an already difficult situation.

During the home invasion, Briones’ service dog Jonah, a French bulldog, ran out. Now he’s nowhere to be found, adding more heartbreak to an already difficult situation.

“He is my child. He is the light of my life, what gives me every day a fighting chance,” Briones said, sobbing. “Please have it in your heart to bring him home safely. I beg you. And I just want justice, so one day nobody else has to suffer what I suffer.”

Haji was denied bond on at least one of the charges in this home invasion.

According to an arrest report, an officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 183rd Street around 2 a.m. when they spotted a white Mercedes speeding.

The officer watched as the Mercedes rolled through a red light then sped through another, the report said.

After the officer stopped the car and approached with their gun drawn, they found the driver, Smith, who had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol on her breath, the report said.

The officer requested a supervisor and Miramar Police respond to assist and perform field sobriety exercises, but Smith refused to perform field sobriety exercises and refused to give a breath sample, the report said.

Smith was arrested and booked into jail. Attorney information wasn’t available.

Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt told reporters Thursday that Smith has been with the department for around nine years and has been a sergeant for just over two years.

“My officers are held to the highest standard both on and off duty. I can assure you that the actions of this individual is not the reflection of our agency as a whole. The sergeant will be relieved of duty and afforded due process accordingly,” Noel-Pratt said.

Police investigate possible shooting, pedestrian hit in Miami Gardens https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/police-investigating-after-reports-of-2-separate-incidents-in-miami-gardens/3253673/ 3253673 post 9359014 https://media.nbcmiami.com/2024/03/MG-SHOOTING-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all There was heavy police presence in a Miami Gardens neighborhood Friday after reports of a shooting and a pedestrian struck at a nearby location.

Miami Gardens Police first reported to the area of Northwest 179th Terrace and Northwest 6th Court for reports of a possible shooting, with police scanner audio indicating a woman had been shot.

Police later received another call for a possible pedestrian struck on Northwest 6th Place.

At this time, it is unclear if the two incidents are connected.

Footage from the scene also showed a woman being airlifted to Aventura Hospital from the area.

NBC6 is still waiting to learn more from police, but the investigation appeared to be centered around a black car that neighbors said had been out on the street since 3 a.m.

Video captured by NBC6 on the scene shows detectives walking around trying to collect evidence and roping off the street. Police have since left the scene.

This is a developing story. Check back with NBC6 for updates.
